Lo que dicen los fans
As a very devout fan of The KWS Band practically since its inception, I have never been disappointed at a show. As usual I had very high hopes for the Oxnard show as the previous show at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center was just awesome. In fact this time I was so excited to introduce 5 of my friends to the bands live performance.
Sadly, the opening riffs of the show were marred by a technical glitch that lasted nearly through the entire 1st song. How on earth does a problem erupt from the 1st note when, I would assume, everything was fine at the conclusion of the sound check? It got cleared up, mostly by the end of the song. If I was onstage I would have just stopped playng until the tekkies figured it out. From my row EE dead center seats I wanted to just jump up and scream at the band to just stop the show and reset. As a paying patron and lifelong fan, that is what we all deserve. The new sound style for the remastered 30th anniversary of the release of Ledbetter Heights left this fan. . . Not thrilled. The engineering of the sound on Sunday night was pretty indescribable. The electronic tweaks to the original sound, with what I'm assuming, as I am not a sound engineer, must have been put through some regiment of electronic reverb and whatever. The guitar was not crisp nor clear. Noah's vocals were so poorly engineered that most of the songs had indeciferable lyrics. The back, from the over the top base lines and Whipper Layton's over mic'ed base drums, had me cringing in my seat and actually feeling sheepish the I had brought my friends. I was so hopeful to hear non-mainline songs like "Aberdeen" being presented as they rarely get stage time. For me, that was the song I came to the show for. Very, very let down. I was at least somewhat relieved when Kenny Wayne announced the end of the Ledbetter Heights portion of the show was complete and upon the 1st note away from that which should have been so flipping awesome, the sound reverted away from whatever they set out to achieve and got back to the tone and mix reminiscent of the some 30+ shows that I have attended over the years. Fortunately, I have another opportunity to see the band in Carmel later this year, as well as other stops to see if this was a one-off not 100% put together show. For my friends, they didn't know that it didn't sound right. The latter half of the show saved the evening, and the experience. As always, I thank The KWS Band and everyone involved for bringing the tour so close to my hometown.
