rhu Biography
RHU is a Denton based composer and multi-instrumentalist. Her vocal style is evocative and captivating, playfully finessing sophisticated melodies, while displaying a tone that is lush and compelling. Her music encompasses an eclectic mix of indie rock and Jazz.
RHU was born Jordan Coffing in Los Angeles California to a film composer/songwriter and graphic artist. Her love of music and performing was always encouraged. She later moved to Houston Texas and attended the High School for the Performing and Visual arts where she studied classical and contemporary voice. She began taking guitar lessons at the age of 14 and was introduced to jazz by her instructor. The rich harmony and powerful voices of Carmen Mcrae, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone are what brought Coffing to love jazz and lead her to attend the University of North Texas to pursue a degree in Jazz. While at UNT she set her roots deep in tradition and carries her timeless heritage with her as she progresses into the future, looking to contemporary paragons from both jazz and indie rock for inspiration.
RHU (pronounced: roo; short for kangaroo) is a childhood nickname given to her by her father to describe the way she jumped around in a swing that hung in the doorway while listening to music. The name symbolizes the earliest stages of her love for music and acts as a reminder to never forget the excitement and pure joy that music should bring.
RHU is releasing her debut EP "Transitioning" on June 18th.
