About this concert
"Gadjo" is in fact a gypsy term for a non- gypsy. All three members of Gadjo Guitars are indeed non-gypsies but you couldn't tell from their playing. Dedicated to the art of gypsy swing and the acoustic guitar in jazz. Improvisation and interplay between the musicians is at the forefront of the ensemble’s mind and makes for a truly memorable show. With improvised introductions and spirited on the spot arrangements of the Django Reinhardt songbook and swing jazz in an effort to create something new from time honoured harmonic frameworks. When asked to describe the music, Nigel Date offered: "It's acoustic music, it's energetic, it's largely improvised. The music is presented in its most organic form creating space between the musicians to exchange musical ideas."

Gadjo Guitars Biography

Gadjo Guitars

Gadjo Guitars is a guitar slinging, sophisticated, powerhouse trio from Sydney Australia.

The musicians are guitarists Nigel Date and Cameron Jones and double bassist Stan Valacos.

Between them they’ve racked up years of professional playing experience in Australia and worldwide.

The three come from diverse backgrounds but their shared love of swinging guitar brought them together.

Stan is the first choice bass player from any number of top jazz musicians throughout the country. He’s appeared at every major jazz festival in Australia on repeated occasions. He plays 7-string guitar in Brazilian music ensembles. He runs a studio. He’s one of the world’s funniest people and keeps time like an atomic clock.

Cameron is one of the hardest working guitarists around. He has a background in rock, blues and country. He’s recorded and performed with stacks of bands. Cameron can fly a plane, crack a safe, renovate your house and still have the energy to enchant a room with his sinuous snaky guitar lines and rocking rhythm playing.

Nigel has played 1000s of gigs. He’s made radio and TV appearances. He’s recorded, composed, performed, produced and engineered studio recording sessions too numerous to count. Recent recordings soon to be released include CD collaborations with people such as James Morrison, Tommy Emmanuel, his brother renowned jazz master Ian Date and a host of great Australian guitar players.

These three create an exciting atmosphere of incredible, wild and beautiful music. They write their own tunes. They can play just about any song from the massive jazz repertoire. Plus lots more besides. They are equally adept at entertaining a small intimate venue on an acoustic level to being main stage at a festival.

Gadjo Guitars has and can collaborate with any number of the best musicians around.

“Gadjo Guitars can really swing and are masterfully representing Django’s music down under”
