Greg Hawkes with Eddie Japan Performing the Music of The Cars As the keyboardist for the legendary Boston band and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members, The Cars, Greg Hawkes forged the sound of rock’s New Wave. Pioneering and pushing the limits of technology and sequencing in the late ’70s and through the ’80s, Greg cemented the synthesizer’s place in rock and pop music, and his contribution has influenced countless artists since. Along with achieving Rock & Roll Hall of Fame status and massive commercial success with The Cars, Greg has been a sought-after session and touring musician, and has worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, Todd Rundgren, and The Turtles. In 2016, Greg collaborated with the acclaimed Boston band Eddie Japan to produce their 2017 album Golden Age. This eventually led to Greg and the band joining forces to create a night of music by The Cars featuring a set list curated by Greg. Since 2019, Greg Hawkes with Eddie Japan Performing the Music of The Cars has been thrilling audiences across the Northeast with an energetic show that includes hits and deeper cuts from The Cars songbook, along with special selections relating to Greg’s amazing musical career. We’re thrilled to announce that acclaimed singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kasim Sulton has been added as a special guest for Greg Hawkes with Eddie Japan Performing the Music of The Cars at the Robins Theatre on Saturday, October 10. Kasim will open the evening with a special guest performance, adding yet another legendary connection to a night celebrating the music and legacy of The Cars. Best known for his work with Utopia, where he wrote and sang the band’s Top 40 hit “Set Me Free,” Kasim has built one of rock’s most respected careers as a performer, songwriter, and recording artist. A longtime member of Meat Loaf’s band, he also served as musical director, was a member of The New Cars alongside Greg Hawkes and has appeared on well over 100 recordings throughout his remarkable career. We’re honored to welcome Kasim to the Robins Theatre stage.

Artist bio
Greg Hawkes (born October 22, 1952) is a musician best known as the keyboardist for the new wave band The Cars.

Hawkes, a native of Fulton, Maryland, attended Atholton High School where he played in a band called Teeth. He then attended Berklee College of Music for two years, majoring in composition and flute. He left to play in various bands, including Martin Mull and his Fabulous Furniture, where he played flute, saxophones and clarinet. He also played in a band called Richard and The Rabbits, which included future Cars bandmates Ric Ocasek and ben orr.

Greg Hawkes' most notable involvement was with The Cars. Hawkes pushed the limits of available technology and sequencing helping to forge the sound of the 80's. His signature sounds include the Prophet V Touch Sync sound heard on Let's Go and Hello Again as well as arpegiated and syncopated synth lines such as on Shake it Up and Heartbeat City.

Hawkes also played with Ric Ocasek as a solo artist, often playing both keyboards and bass guitar. He also did a solo album, Niagara Falls, which was released in 1983. He also plays guitar, percussion instruments, saxophone, clarinet and ukulele.

Hawkes lives in Boston, where he works as a session musician. He is a member of The New Cars, a quasi-reformation of The Cars also featuring original guitarist Elliot Easton. Filling in for other original Cars members are singer/guitarist Todd Rundgren, Utopia bassist/vocalist Kasim Sulton and former The Tubes drummer Prairie Prince. Atom Ellis fills in at bass when Kasim is touring with Meat Loaf. The band is touring through the 2006–2007 season. A new live album with three studio tracks, It's Alive!, was released in June 2006.

Recently Greg has been playing with The Turtles (starring Flo and Eddie).
