She’s fun and formidable and a great way to get the party started. THE JIM DAVISON QUINTET featuring TREVOR MIRES ON TROMBONE Jim is one of the best trumpeters to emerge in British Jazz in the last ten years. His style is an engaging mix of Louis Armstrong and Clark Terry. If you haven’t heard him before you’re in for a treat. He’s joined by the amazing trombone virtuoso Trevor Mires and a fantastic rhythm section. TRIBUTE TO KENNY BALL Trumpet – Alan Bateman Trombone - Ian Bateman Clarinet/Alto Sax – Trevor Whiting Piano – Craig Milverton Banjo - Curtis Volp Bass – TBA Drums – Nick Millward In the 1960’s Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen had numerous hit records during the ‘Trad Boom: Midnight In Moscow, I Love You Samantha, March of the Siamese Children, When I’m Sixty-Four, Sukiyaki, So Do I and many more are still loved by Kenny’s numerous fans. This fantastic band brilliantly recreates the magic of the originals. A TRIBUTE TO JAZZ AT THE PHILHARMONIC Pete Long and Richard Pite’s tribute to Norman Granz’s famous jazz institution which started in 1944 (so we’re celebrating JATP’s 80th anniversary). Duelling trumpets, battling saxophones and to cap it all our three drummers for the day converge on stage to pound the tom toms and pass the paradiddles around. A great way to finish off the afternoon’s entertainment Bristling, hard-swinging, surging, big-toned, competitive, the dictionary can hardly do it justice, what with the rhythm section’s vital swing. Each man on song, trading choruses, eights, fours, riffs, you name it. What a joy. Peter Vacher Jazzwise I didn't believe in reincarnation - not until yesterday afternoon that is when Cadogan Hall was transformed into the Shrine Auditorium, LA and the star-studded line-up was brought back to life and playing better than ever! Buddy and Gene having a drum battle, three tenors honking and squealing selling excitement by the second. The trumpet battle - was it Shavers and McGhee or Roy and Dizzy? They played fast and loose with Georgia Brown she was never sweeter until these guys "kissed" her and sent her, and us, home with smiles on our faces. Lance Liddle Be-Bop Spoken Here MOLDY FIG STAGE 3pm to 5pm JOHN MADDOCKS BAND from 7pm LOUISE BALKWILL WITH MEMBERS OF THE BATEMAN BROTHERS BAND. Louise sings a mix of jazz standards, blues and gospel and accompanies herself on guitar. She’s a hugely entertaining dynamo and she’ll guarantee a hotter than hot set to kick the evening off in the Moldy Fig. THE BATEMAN BROTHERS BAND presents A TRIBUTE TO LOUIS ARMSTRONG Trumpet – Alan Bateman Trombone - Ian Bateman Clarinet/Alto Sax – Trevor Whiting Piano – Craig Milverton Bass – Sandy Suchodolski Drums – Nick Millward MAIN CLUB from 7pm A TRIBUTE TO THE JAZZ COURIERS featuring SIMON SPILLETT and PETE LONG on tenor saxophones. In the 1950s and 60’s the number one modern jazz ensemble in the UK featured the towering tenor sax titans Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott. Breakneck tempos and soaring virtuosity were the trademarks of this remarkable quintet and tonight we recreate the excitement that this unique band generated over sixty years ago and it’s still as fresh as in its heyday. "...passion and musical genius...one hour of sheer delight." Erminia Yardley, review of Simon Spillett/Pete Long Jazz Couriers Tribute, Ronnie Scott’s Club THE PETE LONG BIG BAND The irrepressible Pete Long has put together an eighteen piece big band featuring many of the brightest talents of the UK jazz scene. Pete has chosen a selection of music from the golden era of the big bands ranging from Benny Goodman to Stan Kenton from Count Basie to Duke Ellington, from Glenn Miller to Quincy Jones. "It says much for the musicianship of Long’s crew and his other star soloists...that their replications eschewed parody or pastiche. Numerous and clearly purposeful, this cheery collective set out to take the music off the page and give it renewed life. As Long said, “If this music doesn’t turn you on, you haven’t got a switch!” Quite." Peter Vacher, London Jazz News Musical Director Pete Long Vocalists Louise Cookman and Denny Ilett Trumpets Jim Davison Jonny Bruce Louis Dowdeswell Tom Gardner Trombones Andy Flaxman Matt Seddon Trevor Mires Pete North Saxophones Colin Skinner Jon Shenoy Karen Sharp Robert Fowler Jay Craig Piano: Robin Aspland Guitar: Denny Ilett Bass: Joe Pettitt Drums: Matt Skelton
