About this concert
Shortis and Simpson have embarked on a series of shows that explore the musical influences of a notable guest. So far these have featured Keith Potger of The Seekers, political journalist Karen Middleton, local blues muso DJ Gosper, Nigel and Beth who run Smith’s, and Michael Simic (Mikelengelo of Black sea Gentlemen fame). Next in this impressive line-up is local singer/songwriter/author, Fred Smith.
In Under the Influence, Shortis and Simpson lead him through the singers, the songwriters, the seminal moments, from childhood to the present, that have informed his musical endeavours. And of course the story of his ‘real job’ in the Public Service and his experiences in places like Bougainville and Afghanistan.
Surprising, revealing, funny, entertaining, poignant- don’t miss Under the Influence.

As usual an excellent show. Love the support musos as well. Good venue . Fred always so friendly and welcoming. Excellent repertoire with variety of genres. Slide shows helped a lot. My friend and sister missed not coming but hopefully Fred can visit again. Always welcome to return!

Fred Smith Biography
Over the last 20 years Fred Smith has emerged as one of Australia’s most interesting songwriters. He has been all over the joint: working on peace keeping missions in Afghanistan and the South Pacific, touring in America and travelling the Australian festival circuit.
He is the subject of the film Bougainville Sky about his time in the war-torn islands of the South Pacific where his work as a musician and radio broadcaster contributed to the success of the world’s first unarmed peace keeping force.
Fred was the first Australian diplomat to be posted to Uruzgan in July of 2009. He wrote a powerful collection of songs about the realities of life for soldiers and civilians in this difficult war, recently released on a high acclaimed album called Dust of Uruzgan.
He has put out about 10 CDs, two of which won National Film and Sound Archives Awards. Some of these were joint efforts with Liz Frencham and the Spooky Men's Chorale.
