Among the Oak & Ash Biography

Having spent nearly a decade producing award-winning films (2 features and 1 short) Josh Joplin returns to music with his project, Among The Oak & Ash, by releasing their third record, "Figure Drawing.” Joining him this time are Wes Langlois (Nashville legend, underground poet, actor - I Saw The Light, and famed studio guitarist (Buddy Miller, Jack Schneider) who co-wrote two songs with Joplin, Fats Kaplin (Jack White’s string wizard), Bryan Owings (Emmylou Harris’s drummer), Hannah Miller (her tunes have been featured in films like Little Women and shows like, This Is Us), Allen Broyles (longtime keyboardist for the Josh Joplin Group). Exalted producer, Joe McMahon (Justin Townes Earl, The McCrary Sisters) engineered at his studio Wow & Flutter in Nashville. TimeOut New York praised their songs as a "lush reimagining of Appalachian folk music” while TimeOut London called their high energy live shows “…a must see!” Their 2009 debut was chosen as “Album Of The Year” by WNYC’s famed New Sounds host, John Scheaffer and they were invited as featured guests on Bob Harris’s renowned BBC programme program, The Country Show. They’ve also performed on NPR’s Mountain Stage, World Café and Woodsongs. Joplin made his debut at an early age with his album, Useful Music, and scored a #1 hit with Camera One. His song "Blue Skies Again" was covered by Jessica Lea Mayfield and according to Pitchfork’s review, is “…a sunny reassuring song with a simple infectious chorus makes it a standout…”

If last year’s SOLD-OUT show at City Winery featuring Josh Joplin’s first performance in over a decade proves anything at all, it’s that this talented individual hasn’t missed a beat whatsoever. His gift for performing has only grown and is as natural to him as breathing. If given the chance, see this rather tour-shy singer-songwriter while and when you can!

Josh Joplin and Among The Oak & Ash, play an electrifying array of songs from their forthcoming record, Figure Drawing, along with tunes that launched his career as a young upstart that Paste Magazine compared to Armed Forces era Elvis Costello. His disarming sense of humor and wonderfully skewed worldview has led many to question why this gifted, nearly effortless live entertainer, doesn’t perform more. Entertainment Weekly believes him to be an astoundingly overlooked songwriter whose greatest gift is his self-awareness. Scoring the first independently released #1 song, in Y2K, at Triple A radio with his poignant rocker, Camera One, which was a stark melodic contrast (more 80’s in its production and tone) than the Boybands and Limp Biscuits dominating the airwaves at that time.

Joplin continued to record throughout the 2000’s eventually making his debut on Verve Records in 2009 with the self-titled, Among The Oak & Ash, a collective of musician friends including Garrison Starr, Paleface, Ri¢hie, Fats Kaplin, Wes Lanlois, and Jessica Lea Mayfield, which went on to be named Album Of The Year by WNYC’s famed New Sounds host, John Schaeffer. Joplin also wrote, Blue Skies Again, for Jessica’s, lauded record, Tell Me, which was featured on Showtime’s The Affair, and named a Song Of The Day on iTunes with over a million downloads.
