Biografía del artista
Aidan Farrell is a saxophonist, bandleader, and composer based in Los Angeles. As a performer and recording artist, he is recognized for his robust tone, technical prowess, and soulful expressiveness. His distinctive approach combines traditional jazz foundations with contemporary sensibilities, creating a voice that honors tradition while constantly innovating. Rooted primarily in jazz, he moves with equal command from bebop and modern fusion to R&B, funk, soul, blues, and rock, blending structure with spontaneous creativity in his improvisation.
Beginning his musical studies on the piano at five years old, Aidan built a classical foundation before exploring other genres. His passion for music truly ignited at eleven, when he discovered the saxophone and his love for jazz, taking early inspiration from John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Stan Getz. He has studied with saxophonists Dick Oatts, Doug Webb, Bob Sheppard, Brian Scanlon, and Brandon Fields, worked closely with pianist and arranger Bill Cunliffe, and learned from and performed with Stanley Clarke during Clarke's residency at The BroadStage in Santa Monica. These mentors have challenged Aidan to refine his technical approach while nurturing his own artistic voice.
Aidan's honors include multiple DownBeat Awards and an outstanding soloist distinction from national YoungArts. Earlier in his career, he earned places in many selective, audition-based programs including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Summer Jazz Academy, the Brubeck Jazz Summit, the California Jazz Conservatory, the Stanford Jazz Institute, and the Vail Jazz Summer Workshop, where he was the only tenor saxophonist of the twelve musicians selected nationally.
As a bandleader, Aidan leads the Aidan Farrell Trio, Aidan Farrell Quartets, and the Aidan Farrell Quintet, while maintaining ongoing collaborations and guest appearances across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Performance venues include Sam First, The Baked Potato, The BroadStage, Jazz at the G, The Lighthouse, The Grape, Club 1881, and The Mint, among others. Aidan's quintet recently performed at the Santa Monica International Jazz Festival (2026) under the artistic direction of Stanley Clarke.
Throughout his career Aidan has performed with many musical greats as well as Grammy-winning artists, including Stanley Clarke, Danny Carey, Joe LaBarbera, Roy McCurdy, John Clayton, Doug Webb, Louis Cole, Mitch Forman, Bill Cunliffe, Gregg Karukas, Logan Kane, Jamie Kime, Gary Novak, Jimmy Branly, Brian Charette, Darek Oles, Eric Harland, Rodney Whitaker, Jimmy Vivino, Larry Koonse, Charles Ruggiero, and Mike Gurrola, among many others.
Aidan continues to pursue new projects, refine his sound, and expand his artistic range as a performer and composer, including a growing book of original compositions, featured among his 2026 recordings. He remains devoted to performing, to carrying the jazz tradition forward for a wide range of audiences, and to supporting young musicians while contributing to the vibrant jazz scenes that have shaped his development.
“It's phenomenal and kind of spooky. He plays with a vocabulary that you would not even think that he would be exposed to.”
-Keith Fiddmont, quoted in DownBeat Magazine, June 2024
“Aidan is a rare talent... His extraordinary technique, rich tone, and distinctive sound set him apart as one of the most exciting young musicians I've worked with.”
-Doug Webb, jazz saxophonist and studio musician
“On his present path, Aidan is destined to be one of the great young saxophonists in modern jazz!”
-Bill Cunliffe, jazz pianist, composer, and Grammy Award-winning arranger
