Overton

Overton is a dark melodic punk power trio from Durham, North Carolina, blending fast, hook-driven songwriting with the weight and atmosphere of stoner metal. Their songs move quickly but hit hard — shifting between minor and major keys, layered with rich harmonies and shout-along gang vocals that reward repeat listens without drifting into pop territory.

The band is anchored by three longtime players from the region’s underground scene. Guitarist and vocalist Shayne Miel, formerly of folk-punk staple The Future Kings of Nowhere, is the band’s primary songwriter. Drummer Nathan Buchanan (ex-Bellafea, currently with From Below featuring members of Catharsis) brings precision, force, and prominent backing vocals, while bassist Dante Bruno (formerly of post-punk psych outfit Night Battles) adds melodic weight and additional backing vocals.

What sets Overton apart is its lyrical core. Nearly fifteen years ago, Miel survived stage-four lymphoma after being given just a twenty percent chance of survival. That experience permanently reshaped his relationship with death, aging, and the fragility of the body. Overton’s songs are steeped in rot and finality — grappling with medical trauma, PTSD, and the slow betrayals of flesh — while also channeling righteous anger at institutional failure and social decay. The sharp wordplay that earned Miel a following in earlier projects has evolved here into a more focused, cutting wit.

Formed just over a year ago, Overton grew out of long-standing friendships and a shared desire to fuse punk’s urgency with the doomy ethos of stoner metal, pairing big hooks and harmonies with subject matter that refuses escapism. Their first single, High On Faith, came out at the beginning of April and their full EP will be out in July. The band has begun making live appearances, including a recent opening slot for Wolves & Wolves & Wolves & Wolves, and is positioned to expand quickly as releases roll out.
