Backwater Township Biography
Backwater Township, led by Mi'gmaq visionary Corey Thomas, crafts a musical bridge between indigenous roots and contemporary jazz. They reimagine works of indigenous jazz artists, giving them a vibrant, modern twist. Inspired by Corey's roots in Gesgapegiag, Qc. the band weaves the sounds of traditional community into original compositions. Backwater Township is a rhythmic journey where the past meets the present, creating a harmonious narrative that resonates with cultural richness and musical ingenuity.
Corey Thomas, the driving force behind the band, earned a 2019 nomination for the Oliver Jones Award, a testament to his remarkable musicianship. Commanding attention with compelling performances, Backwater Township has graced the stages of renowned festivals, including Festival Présence Autochtone (2019, 2020, 2022, 2023), Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (2019), Sunset on Somerled (2019), and Festival Jazz et Blues de Saguenay (2023). Their musical journey expanded in the summer of 2023, reaching audiences in the greater Atlantic and Maritime Canadian regions with their first Eastern Canada tour.
The band's musical prowess extends beyond live stages, with their compositions featured on notable CBC Radio shows such as Minotan and the Saturday Night Jazz Show. Backwater Township has also secured a place on influential Spotify curated playlists, including Fresh Finds Jazz, Jazz Bops and The Jazz Collection.
