In other words, there’s just not enough time in a 1 or 2 hour session to really learn very much. So instead, I do a basic overview, demonstrating several tunings in the course. And then I send the students home with links to $100+ worth of free materials. This way, they can teach themselves —perhaps for the rest of their lives. The downloads include simple chord diagrams and tablature to play songs in each of the tunings I cover. There’s also a 96 page book on tunings, a page of several more tunings and links to various online resources. With that in mind, I encourage each class participant to bring a smart phone, tablet, or laptop for connecting to the internet and downloading. Students should also bring a guitar. And I would suggest stringing it with medium-light strings (.12 .16 .24 .32 .44 .54 gauges) since most tunings require tuning down.
