About this concert
Singer Kurt Elling became one of the most popular male jazz vocalists in America over the course of 30-plus years, due to a penchant for creative arrangements and insistence on not making the Great American Songbook the spine of his repertoire. Pianist Danilo Pérez exited his native Panama to become a highly acclaimed solo artist, bandleader, and Smithsonian Legacy Award winner, though he’s best known as the long-running pianist for the late, great Wayne Shorter. The pair collaborated on 2020’s Secrets Are the Best Stories; this show is either Secrets’ long-delayed tour or a preview of new music on the horizon. – Michael Toland

Kurt gave what was quite possibly the most mesmerizing live performance I’ve ever had the privilege of hearing. His repertoire was *chef’s kiss*, his rapport with the audience was so laid-back and intimate, his command of his vocal registers, his at times blink-and-you-miss-it communication with the other musicians, and for that matter - the caliber of musicians he surrounds himself with…it was nothing short of magical. It transported me and reminded me how beautifully vast the world of music is. One of the loveliest evenings I’ve ever had.

Where many male jazz vocalists at this stage in a much vaunted career have tended to stick to the tried and true, Elling seems to be growing more ambitious and experimental with the passing of time, a tendency evidenced by his stunning new LP, SuperBlue: The Iridescent Spree. The followup to 2021’s remarkable SuperBlue, the album once again sees Elling joining forces with producer/guitarist Charlie Hunter and multi-instrumentalist duo drummer Corey Fonville and bassist-keyboardist DJ Harrison for a kaleidoscopic collection of new songs, surprising covers, and dynamic reinventions.
