About this concert
Lucy Kaplansky is an acclaimed singer-songwriter of rare talent, a truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songs (The New Yorker) and the troubadour laureate of modern city folk (The Boston Globe). She has released eight critically acclaimed CDs, two of which were awarded Best Pop Album of the year by the Association for Independent Music. National Public Radio described her 2012 album Reunion as a master class in making the personal universal, and her most recent album Everyday Street has been dubbed spare and luminous and remarkable.Lucy was part of folk supergroup Cry Cry Cry with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell (which The New Yorker dubbed a collection of lovely harmonizing and pure emotion). Their album was an astonishing success in stores and on radio resulting in a national tour of sold-out concerts, as well as a national sold-out reunion tour in 2018.Her recording of Roxy Musics More than This has over 12 million streams on Spotify, and she has been featured on NPRs All Things Considered, Weekend Edition, and Morning Edition as well as BBC Radio 2 and 4, and CBS Sunday Morning, and has sung harmony on albums by Suzanne Vega, Bryan Ferry, Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin. Good performances but two of the 4 artists were recovering from Covid so probably not their best performances. That said it was a very good show!

Lucy Kaplansky Biography

Lucy Kaplansky (born 1960) is a folk musician based in New York City.
Originally from Chicago, at the age of 18, moved to New York City where she became involved in the city's Greenwich Village folk music scene.

In 1983, she decided to become a psychologist, enrolling in Yeshiva University. She continued playing music while doing her PhD, and began to have some success as part of a duo with Shawn Colvin. However, when they began to attract record company interest, Kaplansky declined, choosing instead to set up a private practice and become a staff psychologist at a New York hospital. For several years, she concentrated largely on her work, and played little in the way of concerts. However, she still did some session work, such as singing backing vocals in the studio for Suzanne Vega.

By the early 1990s she found herself increasingly drawn back to music. Colvin, who by this time had experienced some commercial success, offered to produce an album for her. The result, The Tide, a mixture of her own songs and several covers, was released by Red House Records (Greg Brown's label) in 1994. At this time, she decided to give up her psychology practice, and return to music full-time. She released her second album, [album artist=Lucy Kaplansky]Flesh and Bone, in 1996.

In 1998 Kaplansky joined with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form the folk group Cry Cry Cry, which made an album and toured extensively resulting from the success of the originally planned six week tour.

1999's Ten Year Night won rave reviews and boosted her popularity, leading to performances on CBS-TV.
She followed that album with Every Single Day which was released in 2001.

The Red Thread, released in early 2004, includes songs about adopting her new daughter Molly, who Lucy and her husband Rick brought home from China in late 2003, and several songs relating to her experiences living in downtown Manhattan during 9-11. A new album is to be released in March of 2007.
