Chestnut Grove Biography
Chestnut Grove is a five-piece rock n roll band from the suburbs of Philadelphia. Their mix of hook-filled retro pop and rock n roll jam brings fresh vibes to a classic familiar sound. The band's full-length studio debut “The Album” offers an eclectic mix of classic American music.
Their latest single, “Golden Age,” is the first track to come from their upcoming LP. Songwriter James Daniels wrote the song to reflect the rapid changes he was seeing in both society and his own life, caught in the middle between the nostalgic simplicity of youth and the new era that awaits.
Chestnut Grove was formed by John Tyler, James Daniels, Sean Murray and Dee Gerhart in 2011 during their senior year of high school. The band’s name was chosen in memory of would-be member and guitar player Matt Barber, who passed away tragically in a car accident in 2011 on Chestnut Grove Road.
In 2015, members Dee, John, James, Zach Winkler, and Gary Geers, with the help of friend/engineer Owen McGreehan, released their self-produced album “Perkiomenville” to a sold-out hometown crowd at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia.
In 2016, the band recorded the EP “Let it Down,” featuring fan favorite “Whiskey Hand,” with Modest Mouse and Dr. Dog producer Bill Moriarty. The band has shared bills and stages with The Hooters, Turkuaz, Ron Gallo (Toy Soldiers), Cyril Neville & the R.S.B., The Felice Brothers, Ryan Montbleau, Wilderado, People’s Blues Of Richmond, Hoots & Hellmouth, Wild Adriatic, and others while touring the East Coast from 2015 to 2017. Chestnut Grove has headlined the Trocadero, World Cafe Live and Ardmore Music Hall while continuing to gain momentum in the band’s home city of Philadelphia and gathering large crowds at festivals including Mile of Music in Appleton, WI.
In 2018, the band performed live on iHeartRadio’s station, 104.5 FM Philadelphia’s Alternative Rock. The band’s EP “Black Champagne” was released May 2018 by Mad Dragon Records, with single “Scratch an Itch” getting attention again from Radio 104.5.
Chestnut Grove toured the US relentlessly as a part of The Nimbleslick Entertainment roster from 2018-2020 until sidelined by the pandemic. The band is scheduled to release their debut studio album in May of 2021. Follow Chestnut Grove on Patreon for exclusive content.
