About this concert
Teesside sibling duo Cattle & Cane release their brand-new album ‘Golden’ on Friday 17th November 2023 and have just announced their first UK tour since 2019. Joe and Helen will head across the UK in February and March 2024, finishing with a statement regional show here at Sage Gateshead on Saturday 2nd March: With its honest and self-reflective lyrics, ‘Golden’ effortlessly shows why Cattle & Cane are once again making waves in the UK’s burgeoning indie-folk and Americana scenes. The band’s new music is already picking up support from the likes of BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 6 Music, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon and many more. They’re excited to get back on the road. Songwriter and vocalist Joe Hammill explains, “It’s been far too long since our last tour. We can’t wait to play some new songs live, as well as some old favourites, and to visit some cities we’ve not been to since 2019. We’re really proud of our new album ‘Golden’ and it’s been so nice to share new music with people this year.” Having previously self-released three albums, as well as a mini album of covers, Joe and his sister Helen have cultivated a successful cottage industry with a passionate core fanbase. ‘Golden’ sees the Hammills display a confidence and maturity that brings their soaring sibling harmonies and timeless songwriting to the fore. Tours with the likes of The Head & The Heart, Jake Isaac, Nerina Pallot and Half Moon Run, as well as support slots with Brian Wilson, Tom Odell and Lewis Capaldi, have helped Cattle & Cane establish a reputation as a truly magical live act. Sold-out signs are common place at their own headline gigs, including shows at flagship regional venues Sage Gateshead, Tyne Theatre and Middlesbrough Town Hall. With editorial support on playlists such as Very Nearly Nashville, Folk Pop, Feelgood Pop, Your Coffee Break, Fresh Folk, Laidback Acoustic, Feelgood Indie and New Music Fridays in multiple countries, Cattle & Cane have accumulated almost 30m Spotify streams. Over on radio, they’ve picked up praise from legendary tastemakers including Elton John, Dermot O’Leary and Steve Lamacq. Produced by long-time collaborator and the band’s live bassist Luke Elgie, Helen and Joe recorded their parts at home in Teesside and then Luke brought it all together at his studio in Newcastle. The recording process was very much a collaborative effort with mix engineers Mike Butler (Phoebe Bridgers, The Shins, Fanfarlo, Norah Jones) and John Martindale (Holy Moly & The Crackers, The Pale White, Rob Heron And The Tea Pad Orchestra), as well as session musicians including Thomas Fripp (Big Society), Liam Fender, Ada Francis (Lyras) and Harry Fausing Smith (Tom Misch, Freya Ridings, Billie Marten).
