The Leaf Library Biography

"Fascinating, bold and experimental drone-pop..." - Louder Than War "Like experiencing The Clientele’s ghostly pastoral elegies warped through the drone melodies of Stereolab..." - Poplib The Leaf Library are guitarist Matt Ashton (formerly of Peel favourites Saloon, and also Singing Adams), singer Kate Gibson, bass player Gareth Jones (Wintergreen) and drummer / synth wizard Lewis Young. Live they are joined by guitarist Simon Nelson, also of the band Cosines, and saxophonist Daniel Fordham from The Drink. They make multi-layered, two chord drone pop, channeling the warm fuzz of Yo La Tengo, the spacious repetition of Talk Talk, and Movietone’s seaside melancholy to beautiful effect. The band released their debut album Daylight Versions in 2015, a record of woozy love songs about meteorology and the incoming sea that Uncut described as “a charming debut, with songs soaked in atmospheres that conjure thoughts of hazy mists and setting suns”, and the Guardian called “a melancholy wonder”. In 2016 the band released two albums; Nightlight Versions, a drone companion piece to Daylight Versions that The Quietus called “a resounding success” and Uncut a “revealing, restorative experiment”, and an album of remixes (Versions, of course) featuring re-workings by Cavern of Anti-Matter (Tim from Stereolab), Isnaj Dui, Greeen Linez, and two ex-members of Hood, The Declining Winter and A New Line (Related), plus many more. Live they bring a volume and intensity to their performances that’s belied by the gentle drift of their records, with motorik drums busying themselves over a bed of constantly unfurling synth tones. They have appeared at End of the Road Festival, Indietracks, and DoubleDotDash, plus many more. In September 2016 they headlined London’s prestigious St Pancras Old Church with a unique show featuring the woodwind players from A Little Orchestra. They are currently working on a new album and a number of collaborative releases, and will return to playing live in autumn 2017. Drone-pop not-rock
