As a genre, it's defined as the “music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm and blues” (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, 1989). For Jordan and Sasha Marcotte, it is the term that embodies the emotional transparency in the music they compose and perform together in the group that shares their last name.
