A mutual friend introduced Bertrand Bourguignon, Jérome Considérant and Edward Godby in late May 2010. This international concoction was unlikely, a curious feature in many of history’s most inspired partnerships. The collective compositions of Godby, Considérant and Bourguignon take elements from across the spectrum of heavy rock music, played loud and hard. They pride themselves on challenging and innovative structures, capturing an atmosphere of intensity. At first, there were few verses and choruses. There have never been any gimmicks. Castles was a new band with new ideas. You, The Organ Grinder, Castles’ debut album, was created between August 6th and August 11th at Foel Studios, Llanfair Caereinion, Wales. The songs were performed by Bourguignon, Considérant and Godby. They were engineered, recorded, mixed and mastered by Chris Fielding. Released on February 6th 2012 on EyesOfSound records, You, the Organ Grinder was subject to relative critical acclaim, particularly in the British alternative music press. Fiction or Truth is Castles second record. It was recorded during the summer of 2013, in Salem Massachusetts, USA, at Godcity Studios. Kurt Ballou engineered, recorded and mixed the ten songs, all of which were written and performed by Bourguignon, Considérant and Godby. It was mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege, in Portland, Oregon, USA. With Fiction or Truth, Castles set out to write a more listenable and varied set of songs, whilst maintaining their basic desire to compose progressive and mathematically-structured, intense punk rock. Which is what everybody sets out to do.
