Acerca De Melissa Ferrick

Melissa Ferrick
Melissa Ferrick is a trailblazing, genre-defying singer-songwriter whose 30-year career has left a lasting mark on the indie and folk-rock scenes. Known for her raw, vulnerable lyrics and powerful live performances, she rose to prominence in the early '90s after stepping in last-minute to open for Morrissey — a breakthrough that launched a major-label deal and international tours. Through every reinvention, Ferrick remains a bold voice in music: unclassifiable, unapologetic, and unwavering.
An openly queer artist at a time when few were visible in the mainstream, Ferrick has long challenged the norms of the music industry, paving the way for future generations. Regarded by peers as one of the most prolific, generous, and hardworking people in the business, she has released 18 albums, toured with legends like Joan Armatrading and Ani DiFranco and remains committed to music's evolving landscape as a producer, co-writer, and, most recently, a booking agent at Paladin Artists Agency.
After opening for Morrissey in the U.S. and UK, Ferrick signed with Atlantic Records at 21 and released her debut and sophomore albums with the label. Between 1996 and 1999, she released three albums with the Colorado-based indie label W.A.R. Records, and in 2000 launched the nationally distributed independent label Right On Records. Between 2011 and 2013, she released two critically acclaimed albums with the New York–based label MPress Records. Over her career she has won numerous awards for songwriting, production, and performance, and has shared the stage with acts including Morrissey, Joan Armatrading, Weezer, Tegan and Sara, Marc Cohn, Paul Westerberg, Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Ani DiFranco, k.d. lang, Suzanne Vega, and Shawn Colvin, among many others.
In 2023, Ferrick signed with Kill Rock Stars and re-recorded her acclaimed 1999 album Everything I Need — stripped-down and emotionally resonant, just her and a guitar — released October 11, 2024. Bonus tracks include her single "Black Dress" and a cover of Tegan and Sara's "Where Does the Good Go."
Ferrick taught music business, creative entrepreneurship, and songwriting as a Professor at Berklee College of Music from 2011 to 2019, and at Northeastern University from 2019 to 2026. She holds a Master's degree from Harvard University.
Melissa Ferrick is the named plaintiff in the class-action lawsuit Ferrick v. Spotify for willful copyright infringement.

Loved it! This was my second time seeing Melissa perform this year; the first was in Annapolis. I had a great time at both but really like the overall vibe of being in Cambridge, the ambience of Passim and how she connected with the audience. I look forward to seeing her next show.
