Young Lovers

Los Angeles-based post-rock/shoegaze band Young Lovers have long been one of the best-kept secrets of the city’s DIY scene. Comprised of guitarist Mikey Macapagal, drummer Eddie Ramos, bassist Josh Solomon, and vocalist /guitarist Jonny Higa, the group first bonded over attending backyard shows in the San Fernando Valley and quickly earned a reputation as a beloved indie act.

Mikey Macapagal and Josh Solomon both met as teenagers through their school’s marching band and established the beginnings of the group around 2011, steadily building a dedicated audience through different lineups, which first included schoolmates drummer Ford Crispino and singer/songwriter Karen Herrera. During this time they established themselves as one of the premier live acts in the Los Angeles DIY scene, sharing acclaimed bills with bands such as The Fall of Troy, Brokeback, Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos), and Pretend at legendary Southern California venues such as The Smell, Pehrspace, The Hi Hat, The Echo and The Glass House.

2014 saw Young Lovers add current vocalist/guitarist Jonny Higa into the band following the departure of Karen Herrera, further evolving their already startlingly mature sound. Young Lovers released their debut single “Distance // Absence” in 2018 as a split single with Bay Area post-rockers Wander, and toured through SXSW, the Western United States, and Canada in support of the single. Their debut self-titled LP “Young Lovers,” recorded by David Jerkovich (Kind of Like Spitting) over 2017-2019 and across the formation of several studios, was released in 2020, and represented the fully realized expression of the band’s collective output and philosophy.

The band immediately entered the studio with producer David Jerkovich once again to record their sophomore record and upcoming release, “The Circle’s End.” During the recording process, the band went through a final lineup change in 2021 to its current form, as they brought in drummer Eddie Ramos. The new LP sees their sound evolve from their signature energetic synthesis of post-rock and shoegaze into beautifully orchestrated art rock, replete with string quintet and horn orchestration by Mikey Macapagal. Jonny Higa’s father Chris Higa also makes a cameo on trumpet and flugelhorn for several songs as well. The band plans to release the album on June 26, 2026, and to tour in support of the LP.
