Almost didn’t go as a cold snap hit Austin with snow flurries and the temp dropping to 30 F. But by 9 o’clock the snow had stopped so I ventured down to the venue. I caught most of the opener, which was a sort of techno performance art throwback to late 80’s (early 90’s) cyber-goth. A one woman act that sang along to a completely sequenced, if not pre-recorded, set list. Meh, not my thing. Poptone were good, they hit the stage and rambled through some old favs, mostly from the Tones on Tales records, more so than Love & Rockets, and definitely more than Bauhaus - I think they played only one Bauhaus tune, “Slice of Life”. It was great to hear those songs dusted off and played live. I know these guys have been on the road for a while and I wondered if they maybe weren’t sort of ready to wrap it up and get home, there wasn’t a ton of energy on stage. Maybe it was the cold. Maybe, I’m just a jerk. I really liked the set list, they didn’t play “So Alive” thankfully, but did play “Ball of Confusion”. Maybe they laid off of the L&R stuff because David J is still out there. Maybe they focused on Tones tunes because that’s what Poptone was meant for, a sort of reformation of that. I’ve decided i don’t want to see bands at the Mohawk anymore. The outside sucks if the weather isn’t nice. But also, it’s too small. The floor gets packed easily and since that is the only way to get to the bar (when the upstairs bar isn’t open), and that sucks. I dunno, why can’t Austin get some venues with roofs?

Tons of fun!! I especially dug the guy who yelled “I’m on acid!!!” During the show. Hilarity had ensued.
