Acerca De Coheed and Cambria

Coheed and Cambria
Ten albums in, something changed for Coheed and Cambria. As singer, guitarist, and master storyteller Claudio Sanchez began plotting out the sci-fi-inspired New York prog legends’ latest, The Father of Make Believe, he found himself writing more directly about his life and, especially, his career. Amid the wailing guitars, cracking drums, and Sanchez’ powerful voice — centering listeners throughout moments placid and pinwheeling — Coheed devotees will still find plenty of character work and references to the lore. But if you’re new here, there’s no homework required to feel our host’s hopes, fears, battles, and triumphs. Of course, you may get drawn in anyway. Coheed — which includes Travis Stever (lead guitar), Josh Eppard (drums), and Zach Cooper (bass) — emerged in the early 2000s wedged between an emo renaissance and a metal revival. While their peers broke hearts and banged heads, they crafted Game of Thrones-level fantasies around their Amory Wars storyline, which unfurls across 78 planets known as Heaven’s Fence. Eight of the band’s albums thus far (plus a small galaxy of comics and novels) live in this space and so does The Father of Make Believe. It’s just that the sky is cracking, revealing the hand behind the scene. In the past, says Sanchez, “I’ve kept the struggles of my life private. When I can’t express myself in words, I express in worlds.” And yet, as he assumes the role of main character, Coheed are yet again finding new ways to bring us into their universe.

coheed had a really good night. claudio really killed the singing parts on evagria. josh added tons of great little flourishes on the songs that are not present on the record. that man has impeccable taste. was beyond cool to see songs on that stage that i may never see live again.
turnover almost put me to sleep. love that band but man, just tired. singer had a rough time vocally, maybe just an off day who knows. he did say something interesting about them and coheed, how they never really fit in with their peers but were always unabashedly themselves. that’s a great way to sum up why i like them in a sentence.
the home team. well. they were kinda lame but the crowd dug it. they did really kill worthy and loud. the lead singer should really update his bag of dance moves. he had this one little jam that looked something like a toddler’s first time feeling a groove. his voice was pretty alright considering he is almost always in a high belt. not sure the guitarist was really playing anything 90% of the time. i like a lot
of their songs but not someone i would pay money to see live.

I am an ardent fan of Coheed & Cambria. One of my absolute favorite bands. I felt really bad for them last night during their opening set to Shinedown. I know it’s a common practice for the sound engineering to purposely make each opening band sound of “lesser quality” before the headliners. It’s happened for ages. The opening bands get buried in the mix and the headliner gets all the bells and whistles to really give the impression that the headliners a better quality product. I’ve been involved in touring I know how it works. But last night, Coheed got screwed over pretty bad. Nobody could hear anything Claudio was singing for the first 5 out of maybe 7 songs they did for their set. Then magically, you could hear Claudio singing for the last two songs. I know the engineers have a job to do but it really did a disservice to Coheed in my opinion. They are an amazing band that deserves better treatment in a situation like that. On a better note, before they went on, I ran into their bassist Zach Cooper who was just hanging out with his family and got to speak with him briefly. What a fantastic guy he is and so talented.
Also, Shinedown was absolutely amazing to watch. Masters of their craft.
