Jorge Rossy Biography

Jorge Rossy (also known as Jordi Rossy), Barcelona 1964, started playing drums at age 11. Between 1980 and 1989 he toured and recorded extensively with most musicians in the Spanish scene and some internationally acclaimed artists including Woody Shaw, Kenny Wheeler, Jack Walrath, Dave Schinitter, Sal Nistico, and Sean Levitt. In 1989 he moved to Boston to study trumpet at Berklee College of Music. In Boston Jorge became the drummer of choice for many of his peers and joined Danilo Perez trio for some gigs in Panama, France, Boston and New York. He then joined Paquito D’Rivera sextet for 2 years and moved to New York City in 1991. In NY, Jorge played in the early recordings of many of his Boston friends including Mark Turner, Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake, Kurt Rosenwinkel as well as other musicians of that same generation then living in the city, such as Brad Mehldau, Ethan Iverson, Reid Anderson, Avishai Cohen, Joe Martin, and Freddie Bryant. Jorge also worked and recorded with Joshua Redman, Bill McHenry, Bruce Barth, Mike Kanan, Ben Monder, Nat Su, Steve Wilson, Mark Johnson, Larry Grenadier, and Ben Street, to mention a few. In 1995 he started touring around the world and recording extensively with the Brad Mehldau trio for 10 years . During this time he also toured and recorded with The Bloom Daddies, an electric high-voltage band led by Chris Cheek and Seamus Blake, with Jesse Murphy on bass and a two-drummer team made up of Jorge and Dan Reiser or, later, Tony Mason. In 2000, Jorge moved back to Barcelona to raise a family and to start focusing on piano. In the last 10 years Jordi has been playing and recording on piano with some bands like Jordi Matas Quintet and Joe Smith Septet and several projects with Guillermo Klein, including a performance at Merkin Hall in NYC and the Library of Congress Auditorium in Washington DC. Since 2006 Jordi has recorded is first album as a leader ¨Wicca¨ in trio with Albert Sanz on Hammond organ and RJ Miller on drums and also his second outing ¨IVLIANVS Suite¨ with the same rhythm section plus Chris Cheek on sax and Felix Rossy (Jorge's son) on trumpet. Jorge's band has been touring around Spain, the East Coast of USA, Morocco, Italy and also performed in 2010 in Basel, Switzerland. But during this time Jorge has also been busy playing drums occasionally with Lee Konitz and Ethan Iverson quartet, Charlie Haden’s Quartet West and Land of the Sun Septet, Carla Bley’s Liberation Orchestra, Joe Lovano’s Quartet Europa, Kurt Rosenwinkel quintet, Seamus Blake Quartet, trio 2000 with Chick Corea and NHOP and another trio with Brad Mehldau and Charlie Haden. More recently he played with Wayne Shorter Quartet in European Tour 2012. —SPANISH VERSION— Jorge Rossy, Barcelona 1964 (también conocido como Jordi Rossy), comenzó a tocar la batería a los 11 años. Entre 1982 y 1989 toca y graba con la mayoría de los músicos de la escena española como Perico Sambeat, Tete Montoliu, Carles Benavent o Chano Domínguez y con músicos de renombre internacional como Woody Shaw, Kenn y Wheeler, Jack Walrath, Dave Schinitter, Sal Nistico, Sean Levitt, entre otros. En 1989 se traslada a Boston para estudiar trompeta en la Berklee College of Music. En Boston, Jorge se convierte en el batería elegido por muchos músicos y se une al Trío de Danilo Pérez para dar algunos conciertos en Panamá, Francia, Boston y Nueva York, luego se une al Sexteto de Paquito de Rivera durante dos años y se traslada a Nueva York en 1991. En los últimos 10 años Jorge Rossy ha estado tocando y grabando al piano con bandas como Jordi Matas Quintet o Joe Smith Septet y con varios proyectos con Guillermo Klein, incluyendo una actuación en el Merklin Home de Nueva York y la Biblioteca del Auditorio Congreso Washington D.C. Desde 2006 Jorge ha grabado su primer álbum como líder, “Wicca”, a trío con Albert Sanz en el órgano Hammon y RJ miller a la batería, y también su segundo álbum, “IVLIANVS Suite”, con la misma sección de rítmica, más Chris Cheek al saxo y Félix Rossy (hijo de Jorge) a la trompeta. La banda liderada por Rossy ha estado de gira por toda España, la costa este de Estados Unidos, Marruecos, Italia y también han actuado en 2010 en Basilea (Suiza). Pero durante este tiempo Jorge también ha estado tocando la batería ocasionalmente con Lee Konitz y Ethan Everson Quartet, Charlie Haden´s Quartet West y Land of the Sun Septet, Carla Bley´s Liberation Orchestra, Joe Lovano´s Quartet Europa, Kurt Rosenwinkel Quintet, Seamus Blake Quartet, trio 2000 con Chick Corea y NHOP y otro trío con Brad Mehldau y Charlie Haden. A lo largo del año 2012 Jorge ha grabado diversos trabajos entre otros su tercer disco como pianista y compositor, Iri´s Blues junto a Félix Rossy, Raffi Garabedian, RJ Miller y Ben Street.
