PLUTO JONZE

After hitting ‘Eject’ last year on his debut album, Pluto Jonze is releasing his sophomore EP ‘Sucker’ and going on to headline his own national tour. On November 14 Pluto Jonze will once again bestow upon us a set of indie pop gems to tide us over throughout the summer period. Mixing the instant guitar hooks of The Cars with the alternative weirdness of Ween, Pluto Jonze inhabits a similar strange place in pop – one that is hard not to enjoy. The EP’s opener ‘Wear Purple At My Funeral’ invites you into the band’s world, with a jittery organ prelude to ebola-baiting “Ooh Woo Ooh”’s. We are rallied to enjoy the subject’s funeral (by bringing llamas) via some of the most tasteful vocoder work mechanically possible.To continue the EP’s whimsy, ‘Breakfast in Korea’ boasts the simplest acoustic guitar and drum pattern possible, quickly welcoming in a chorus that would make Ric Ocasek wince with jealousy, eventually busting out a beautifully crafted dirty keyboard solo. The EP’s first single ‘Sucker’ takes the reins next, a slow burner to give the songs some room to breathe. With its mid-tempo groove and 90’s downbeat guitar it sits perfectly in the middle with a giant sounding hook. Next is arguably the EP’s busiest track, the two-minute slammer ‘Too Much Money’. With it’s manic vocal delivery, and proclamation of owning hotels on every big square (‘Bond Street, Piccadilly, Mayfair’ specifically) it brings the tempo back up for EP closer ‘Foolin’ With Nature’. Sampling a chimps screech and utilizing bombastic horns to punctuate a giant rhythm, this recalls Primal Scream’s ‘Screamadelica’ with the tempo cranked. The full-steam-ahead pop of Pluto Jonze is difficult to place, with the use of strange vocal effects, sparing, effective sampling and rock n roll guitar riffing, it is easy to compare the music to that of Weezer or Beck, but it is altogether something different. After recently performing his largest stages to date with Ball Park Music, Pluto is ready to take the headline spot himself this December.
