Shh Biography

SHH was formed when singer Diana Huarte enlisted DJ Daniel Gorgostegui to help start an opera club in one of Buenos Aires's many ultra-cool bars. The club never happened but, after hours spent listening to (and arguing about) other people's records they realised they had to make their own: SHH was born. It was 1999 and dance music was at it's height. SHH vowed to give electronic music it's pop back: It needed, lyrics, sophistication, to start telling stories again. And, most of all, it needed tunes: big, catchy sing-along-able, pop tunes. As Diana says "We listen to all sorts of different things, pop, indie, dance music, opera, weird electronic stuff, but basically SHH make songs. What people remember are melodies. Melodies are the most important thing that we do." Right from the beginning, SHH was a live band, their songs written for playing live, onstage, to up-for-it audiences. Both Diana and Dany were already seasoned performers. Diana studied opera at the Lopez Bouchardo National Conservatory and had also worked as a television presenter. As well as a busy DJ (which he still is to this day), Dany had also been a member of Los Visitantes, a band who achieved considerable success as part of the Argentine “sonic rock” scene of the mid 90s. SHH have released two albums full of songs about nightclubbing naughtiness and clubbing excess as well as more personal intimate tales of love, life, insects and death, all perfectly capturing the decadent spirit of modern Buenos Aires. “SHH”, their self titled debut, released by local independent label Oui-Oui Records in 2006 garnered critical acclaim for it's slick electronic production, Diana's sharply observant, wickedly wry lyrics and the ease with which it shifted from the electronic disco of “Verano” through to the stadium-sized balladry of “Sin Dormir” via the Mo' Waxed electrotango of “Ausencias”. 2009 will see SHH expand their horizons even further. Their new album, “Gaucho Boy” is altogether a tougher, clubbier beast. It was produced by cheekypaul (www.cheekypaul.com), a veteran studio boffin who has worked with the likes of Sasha and Digweed, Jeremy Healy (including the Dior fashion shows) and the Chemical Brothers. “Wonderful Night” puts Italo Disco on techno steroids while “Caceria” impregnates some choppy electro with a pogo-tastic punky chorus; “Donde” re-strings a lick worthy of the young Supergrass into an indie-dance anthem, “Sensacion” pops into Fabric at 4am while “Elena Hernandez” is the model of Mexican-tinged downtempo restraint, at least until the hard-hitting the lyrical punchline kicks in. Now based on two continents (Diana recently moved to London), SHH are busy creating visuals, choosing outfits, brushing up their dance moves and fine-tuning their live sound before taking their new album (and some old favourites) out on the road.
