Achoo! Bless You are kicking off 2014 with the release of their new single Wild Eyes on February 4th. The release follows on from 2012’s No Island EP, which included the lead single Before We Say Goodbye. – “So much cuteness and warmth wrapped into a little pop song.” 4/5 – Dom Alessio, Triple J Maintaining the same pop sensibility that saw Before We Say Goodbye garner air play on Triple J radio, FBi radio Sydney, rotation on Triple J Unearthed, as well as spins across a host of regional stations around the country, Wild Eyes is a mature sonic progression for the band. The group’s staple of acoustic guitars, ukulele and glockenspiel are bolstered by gutsy, indie/alt. country electric guitar runs, intricate drum rhythms, and a soaring, violin-led middle-eight. Singer/songwriters Ashleigh Steel and Ross James Tipper’s lead vocals weave together beautifully to create the perfect call-and-response story of heartache, emotional distance and ultimately, as is so often with the pair’s songwriting, an underlying notion of eventual reconciliation. Having shared a stage in the past with the likes of Passenger (UK), Slow Club (UK), Tim Rodgers (You Am I), Tiny Ruins (NZ) and, most recently, The Trouble With Templeton on their national tour with Battleships, Achoo! Bless You are fast developing an impressive live resume. The energy between Ross and Ashleigh is electric, as would be expected only from a duo whose musical connection has spilled over into their personal life. There’s something very raw and real about their performances, as the couple weave their stories of heartbreak and heart-mend, often stealing glances at each other throughout, as their connection captivates the audience. The strength of Achoo! Bless You, however, is in their ability to also explore the darker side of human relationships and situations; what lies beneath the sunny exterior. Their interplay between light and dark, his and her, indie-pop and acoustic folk, is what makes Achoo! Bless You so enticingly unique.
