Canary oh Canary Biography

Canary oh Canary is Josie Davis – bass, Michael Harl – guitar and vocals and Mark Hutcherson - drums Canary oh Canary came together out of what was, literally, the luck of the draw. In July of 2010 Michael Harl’s and Josie Davis’ names were drawn from a hat along with three others at an event known as Rock Lotto. The seed for what is currently Canary oh Canary had been planted. Recognizing similarities in their approach to music and a desire to explore possibilities within, the two continued to collaborate beyond Rock Lotto, keeping the name Canary oh Canary. Mark Hutcherson joined the band in December 2011 bringing with him a rock solid foundation of Krautrock inspired beats delivered with ferocity and technical style. Josie’s minimalist, groove heavy bass lines allow Michael’s sparse garage/surf guitar riffs and moody vocal styling to weave in and out creating an audio aesthetic that is unique to Canary oh Canary. It’s a well-balanced sound that hangs on the space between reveling in the quiet moments while celebrating the wall of sound crescendo. Each member contributes equally and is informed by one another in the conversations that are songs. Known for performances of mesmerizing intensity, Canary oh Canary has developed a reputation as a must see live band that will have one transfixed, wide eyed with excitement and completely enveloped by the moment. Canary oh Canary released their debut E.P. “Last Night In Sunway Knolls” August 2011 and the “Live Radio” single March 2012. A full length entitled “Sleep” was released July 11, 2013. All are available at http://canaryohcanary.bandcamp.com. “Canary Oh Canary take elements of shoegaze and experimental rock to create a style that is entirely their own." “There is a sense of patience in the way they let a song build. On their debut EP, two of the songs take up about seventeen minutes combined. This is something that I would think could terrify most new and upcoming groups. In order to believe in this songwriting practice, you have to put a tremendous amount of confidence in your audience. If Saturday night was any indication during the performance of their epic “Embrace,” the audience is right there with them, and people followed the band around after their set to compliment their efforts. Everybody was buzzing about how Canary Oh Canary was their new favorite band.” - Shannon Cleary, RVA Magazine — “Canary oh Canary is a study of moderation. The Richmond-based post-punk trio ... is a formidable combination of linear wit, melodic restraint and compositional veracity. On their self-released debut EP, “Last Night in Sunway Knolls,” the group incorporates the expansiveness of Television’s “Marquee Moon” with the clipped, agitated musical economy of early Wire and the Fall to create their distinctive narratives. From the naked, “Flowers of Romance”-era Public Image-inspired simplicity of the slyly catchy “Embrace” to the subtle, unrelenting crawl of the closing title track, each note they play is gracefully placed to extenuate the unit’s temptuous team-first titillations. It is powerful stuff, and their carefully measured restraints grow more intoxicating with each listen. If you are a fan of the Gun Club’s more pastoral explorations, Echo & The Bunnymen or The Cure’s 1982 dark classic, “Pornography,” I cannot recommend this band enough.” – Chris Bopst, Richmond Times Dispatch Bands and artists we have shared a stage with: A Place to Bury Strangers, Absent Center, Adah, Amen Dunes, The Ar-Kaics, Asobi Seksu, The Awesome Few, Baby Help Me Forget, Bad Magic, Bearfoot Summer, Bermuda Triangles, Black Girls, Black Liquid, Bleeding Rainbow, Bootblacks, Broken Water, The Cales, The Candy Spots, Cardinal Compass, Carnival, Carson Mell, Cheers Elephant, The Colloquial Orchestra, Creepoid, Crushed Purple, CUSSES, Damon Moon and the Whispering Drifters, Dangerosa, Dead Fame, Deep Time, Destroy Nate Allen, The Diamond Center, Diamonds in the Rough, Diarrhea Planet, Dreambook, Ed Schrader's Music Beat, Ego Likeness, Everyone Dies in the End, Fire Bison, The Fire Tapes, Friends of Yours, Future Islands, Gangland Buries Its Own, The Garbers, Ghostwriter, Gilmore Guys, Gunboat, Half Jeffersons, Happy New Year, Harro Sugar, Heavy Midgets, Heyrocco, The Hill and Wood, Hoax Hunters, Hoboknife, Horsehead, Hot Dolphin, Houdan The Mystic.
