Started in 2011, the Urban Arts Festival has become one of the most unique and exciting events of the year in SLC. The festival draws over 5,000 in attendance annually and showcases hundreds of artists, performers, and musicians. Last year the readers of City Weekly voted the Urban Arts Festival as the BEST new Festival in Utah!In 2013 the festival is moving to the Gateway mall, which will allow for the growth of this year’s festival to include double the capacity of artists and attendees. It is a full day and evening celebration of Salt Lake’s urban and artistic culture for the community, art lovers, and families. The festival features artists, music, dance performance, and skateboarding displays as well as art projects created at the festival by youth groups and local artists.THE URBAN ARTS FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE, 2013Over 100 artists displaying and selling everything from paintings, photography, and prints to jewelry, clothing, and sculpture.Music from over 30 different groups—featuring hip-hop, rock, funk, and jazz.Dance performances from top urban dance groups—featuring breakdancing battles and showcases throughout the day.Skateboarding demonstrations, workshops, and competitions for all ages and skill levels.Urban gardening area with demonstrations throughout the day.Live painting demonstrations from Utah’s top mural artists as well as a community wall for everyone to paint on.Food vendors and booths from non-profit groups and sponsors.URBAN ARTS FESTIVAL BENEFITS TO SLC AND THE COMMUNITY The Urban Arts Festival benefits the community in Salt Lake in many ways, including giving the public an opportunity to experience some of the most relevant and current art in the state. Attendees will experience some of the newest and most innovative dance and music performances available, as well as witness professional skateboard demonstrations. The public can also participate in the many projects at the festival, whether it is creating their own skate deck art, voting in the several audience-choice competitions at the festival, taking art and skateboarding workshops, or just enjoying the unique atmosphere that can only be found at the Urban Arts Festival. The festival draws thousands of people, both from inside and outside the state, to downtown SLC for the day, supporting local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, shops, parking lots, and clubs. The economic benefits also extend to the artists that sell their unique works at the festival and the many musicians and performers that use this opportunity to increase their visibility and expand their audience. We estimate that the average attendee will spend $50.00 in SLC during their visit, bringing in an estimated $500,000 to the downtown economy. This festival is unique to the city as it provides the best opportunity for Urban Artists to be showcased and celebrated for the positive cultural impact they have on the society.Urban Art is all about city life and Salt Lake City has an amazingly diverse population, many of whom relate in one way or another to urban cultural/artistic expressions.

Funk Fu Biography

Funk fu was formed back in 420 B.C. When a roaming Shaolin Monk found 2 mcee Ninjas with crazy flava styles, and came up with the idea to form the ultimate musical groove system. All they needed were the right warriors, so for hundreds of years the search continued, until about 420 A.D. when the 2 Ninjas and the Monk went out to sail the scurvy seas in their pirate ship and found a distant island called Mullet Isle, in the sea of Yyaarr "what could possibly be on Mullet Isle" the 3 warriors thought...sooo after beaching the pirate ship they found out that there were many mullets on Mullet Isle and the power emanating off of them was immense! They thought, "We must find the third warrior on this Isle, it would be power beyond belief!" After a few years of searching and perfecting their own skills, they finally found the ultra-mullet, pretty much a bunch of mullet styles thrown in to one huge powerful awesome mullet!!! They convinced the bearer of this powerful doo to join them and he agreed, he just had to cut off the mullet and leave the island but he knew that it was his destiny, so he did just that. So the 2 Ninja Mcees, the Drumming Monk, and the Master Stringman came to be, and greatly perfected their skills over the next 420 or so years, but there always seemed to be something missing.... Until one day about 1420 A.D. a voice cried out to all of them from the depths of the ocean!!! "What could it be?!?!" they all asked, so they exited the studio in the pirate ship out onto the desk, and right before their eyes was a musician with uncanny style!! THATS IT they all cried, that's the missing element we need to call our style complete!! "HAIL to the greatest musical warriors on Earth!" the being said, "I have come before thou from thy depths of the world to make thy system complete with BASS from bowels of the planet!" With the edition of the Low Frequency Badass, the 2 Ninja Mcees, the Drumming Monk, and the Master Stringman, the master styles of Funk Fu were born onto planet earth. Unfortunately something this badass takes a large amount of time, quite a few thousand years (the warriors have been perfecting the style throughout many previous lifetimes)...starting around 2006 A.D, the warriors have released two albums, and a third coming soon! Funk Fu has played countless shows all over the western US, opening for large acts such as Pepper and The Phunk Junkiez, and has also played some large festivals such as the Utah Arts Festival and numerous packed venues all over Utah!
