The Last Royals Biography
Life, love and daily drudgery. Soaring highs and bottomed-out lows of this insane modern existence. This is the stuff of pop songs. The Last Royals exists both in this world and in the suspended teenage brain of singer-songwriter Eric James.
Originally an outlet from producing and co-writing other wildly different projects, The Last Royals began as an experiment inspired by the miles of NYC concrete that James walked daily in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Writing and recording in the early off-hours of the morning, James wrote and tracked one song per day for 8 days of self-described “urban walking music”. The songs grew into something much more organic and caught the attention of Ooh La La Records, a Brooklyn based label. James eventually teamed up with drummer Mason Ingram to make it all come to life in the studio and on stage.
Buoyed by the early success of the first single ‘Crystal Vases’ (“It’s so good, you’d never guess its origins were so trashy." - American Songwriter) the band enjoyed life in an indie-darling fast line for a little, fleeting while. The tours were a blast, success was just around the corner and everything went terribly wrong along the way, as it so often does.
But it was the songs that were always at the heart of it… “The Last Royals don't necessarily make music to commemorate the calamities and the ugly episodes, but they slip into these stories of trying relationships that feel as if they're headed down the wrong path. Even a song about longing and missing a sweetheart feels like it's gone beyond simple sadness. It's gone somewhere just a little darker…” - Daytrotter Originally released back in 2013, ‘Twistification’, the band’s first LP was followed up by the moodier ‘Never Be Alone’ in 2016.
And still life, love (and drudgery) go on. After a long hiatus, James has returned to his dark and dreamy journals again with a brand new collection of ideas. Sweeping love ballads, confessions about addiction and tunes reveling in his self-proclaimed specialty; scathing cultural commentary, make ‘Truly. Modern. Love’ another feather in the cap of that thing we all love so much about pop music… listening to someone tell it like it is.
Look for fresh singles and the new LP, ‘Truly. Modern. Love’ to be released late 2022 into 2023.
