The Plate Scrapers (www.theplatescrapers.com) recently were featured in the Frederick Music Festival at the Weinberg Center for the Arts. They originated in 2014 in western Maryland the way any good bluegrass band does: from a bunch of fellers pickin’ around in a circle, surrounded by delicious plates of food, strong libations, and good friends. The traditional spirit of The Plate Scrapers is still innately intact nearly half a decade later, though they have evolved into far more than your average bluegrass band. Through diverse backgrounds and influences ranging from jazz, to hard rock, to funk, the band has taken their music to an eclectic new level.
The Plate Scrapers’ songwriting is the identifying characteristic of the band. Complimenting writing styles from multiple members offer a tasteful balance and refreshing diversity to their sound, a diversity which they thoroughly excersize. Crafted musicianship and creative chemistry on stage guarantees that each performance is a new experience. More recently, the band has been known to take advantage of the sound shaping tools of modern music to enhance their traditional folk instruments whether it results in a screaming dobro or a sonically-warping banjo. Fans and critics alike agree that things are moving in a positive direction for The Plate Scrapers.
The acoustic duo, Herb & Hanson (http://herbandhanson.com), features two songwriters expressing themselves with little more than a guitar, a mandolin, and their respective voices. Based out of Virginia, these restless ragamuffins have performed for audiences from Alaska’s gold mines to California’s grape-vines. They’ve wowed crowds from the Great Lakes to the Carolinas; from the dry deserts of the southwest to the wet wilderness of the north east. Their voracious work ethic noticeably shines through as their vocal harmonies intertwine with their adept instrumental work to bring their original compositions alive to any able listener.
Herb & Hanson perform songs written and composed from their unique life experiences and the myriad of musical inspirations from Americana’s oldest influences. Incorporating the blues styles of both the Piedmont and Delta regions, the lyrical themes of the Blue Ridge hills, and the Ragtime bounce of America’s oldest cities into their songwriting and live show, this prodigious pair seeks to relay these traditions in a contemporary way for their audience to ruminate.
