Kamasi Washington is the jazz musician that non-jazz fans know. The saxophonist, composer, producer and bandleader had a huge presence on Kendrick Lamar’s last two albums, arranging strings and playing tenor sax on To Pimp a Butterfly and DAMN. Apart from that, however, Washington has long been viewed as the center of a rejuvenated West Coast jazz scene, releasing debut The Epic in 2015 and premiering Harmony of Difference at the Whitney Biennial in 2017. In June he’ll release Heaven and Earth, merging big-band sounds with social consciousness and dark, spacey tones. Single “Fists of Fury” offers a reworked arrangement of the theme from the classic 1970s kung fu film, and is appropriately lush and cinematic.

The man is great as he’s turning a new generation of young folks who grew up listening to hip-Hợp to the best Jazz heard in years. Unfortunately the acoustic was simply awful and some of the nuances got lost in one of the worst venues I’ve seen in years.
Kamasi ROCKS. GREAT band...horn section and all. Great fusion jazz...a must see!
Loved experiencing Kamasi Washington and so much of the West Coast Get Down thru Re Run, Truth, Street Fighter Mas and Fists of Fury and more. So good. Kamasi transcends always. Patrice Q and those vocals. Brandon C and those keys. Miles and that bass. Ryan and that slide. Yo. See them in this lifetime.
