Songwriting can be a solitary exercise. It can be a collaboration. Or it can be what the popular Kansas City “antique pop” duo Victor & Penny make it over two uniquely stimulating sessions at the Library: a community experience.

The two musicians – aka Jeff Freling and Erin McGrane – begin with Tuesday morning song lab at the Central Library, inviting patrons on site and others on social media to submit ideas and words to fold into verse. From that, Victor & Penny craft a song.

They perform the original arrangement as part of a Thursday evening event at the Plaza Branch, also discussing their work as professional musicians, playing a few of their own songs, and opening the floor for give-and-take with patrons.

The two-pronged event is part of the Library’s 2018 adult summer reading program, Rock & Read.VP Song Lab | Live Songwriting Laboratory
Jeff Freling and Erin McGrane of nationally-touring group Victor & Penny are teaming up with the KC Public Library for their "Reading Rocks" program to get creative! The duo will be writing songs and interacting with library patrons in their live songwriting laboratory over the lunch hour in the lobby of the downtown Central Library branch.

ABOUT VPsongLab
To demystify the artistic process, nationally touring musicians Erin McGrane and Jeff Freling of Victor & Penny will create a songwriting lab in the lobby the KC Central Downtown Library. The duo will examine the performing artist’s need to balance public appearances with solitary time to create new material by writing original musical compositions and lyrics as a performative act. Library customers, fans and followers will be invited to be part of the creative process by submitting short phrases for artistic inspiration and possible inclusion within the new songs. On Thursday, June 21 the Plaza Library Branch will hold an artist talkback and Q&A about the recent VP Song Lab, including a new song reveal and a short performance.
