The Rubin Museum
June 15th 2016
The Rubin Museum's Naked Soul series provides a raw interaction between fans and songwriters. The lack of amplification emphasizes the foundational roots underneath the artist's material. Nicole Atkins is a perfect artist for the series due to her voice, which communicates soul without a microphone, and her catalogue, which whirls between classic forms like the characters in her songs fall through emotional phases. During last night's set, familiar Atkins tunes such as Neptune City and War is Hell translated seamlessly to the stripped provisions of Naked Soul, but the highlight of the evening were her new titles like 'Listen Up' and 'Colors' which pointed to an evolution in her songs toward the brutally (and beautifully) personal. 'Colors,' a song about struggling to avoid drinking in a constantly drunk culture, will especially resonate with anyone who has felt a social situation would be easier with a cold companion, when they know that companion is not actually their friend. "Listen Up," a swirling soulful rush, celebrates the perspective that could be won from the battles we've lost. The show also featured excellent piano accompaniment by Dave Sherman. And nothing like wandering through Himalayan art exhibits (up a winding staircase) after the set.
