Entente cordiale: Milton Court Artist-in-Residence Roderick Williams presents a beautifully curated programme of songs from England and France.

There aren’t many living singers who’ve done more for English song than Roderick Williams – or done it with more affection and style. But an artist of Williams’s range never falls into easy stereotypes: tonight, he pairs songs by Vaughan Williams and John Ireland with Fauré and Ravel.

Actually, that makes perfect sense: it’s too easy to forget that Vaughan Williams was actually Ravel’s pupil. For Roderick Williams, though, it’s first and foremost about communication: ‘I’d love audiences to think, "What an amazing juxtaposition of music and poetry this is”’, he says. He doesn’t add that he expresses both words and music with unmatched artistry and warmth.
