The Sephardic Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492. The Iberian peninsula at the time was known as "Sefarad" and so the Jews that came from the area were thus dubbed "Sefaradim". They migrated to lands all throughout the Mediterranean including Turkey, Greece, the Balkans and Northern Africa, especially Morocco, bringing their language, culture and history with them. Sephardic music is a rich amalgam of the music and cultures experienced by the Jewish diaspora in these regions.

Come learn about the music that Sephardic communities still sing today. You will also learn to sing one song from either side of the Mediterranean: one Moroccan tune in 6/8, and one Turkish tune in 9/8. Bring a piece of percussion if you wish to accompany yourself in rhythm.

COST: $20.

The Toronto-born singer’s voice is as fierce and powerful as it is delicate and ornamental, and she is as comfortable pouring out heart-wrenching flamenco as she is bringing ancient Sephardic love songs to life, or singing Balkan dance tunes in quirky rhythms. Tamar spent her childhood traveling and performing in Europe, Morocco, Turkey and Israel with her ethnomusicologist/singer mother Dr. Judith Cohen, absorbing musical traditions spanning continents while becoming fluent in French, Spanish and Portuguese. By the time she was five, Tamar was performing Sephardic (Ladino), Balkan and Medieval music in multiple languages. Tamar’s diverse musical experience makes her a coveted performer across cultures and genres. Besides her band, Ventanas, she has performed and recorded with the Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company, David Buchbinder, Aline Morales, Jesse Cook, the Lemon Bucket Orkestra, and countless others.

Tamar Ilana will be performing with her band Ventanas on Saturday February 24th at the Russian Hall. For more info about the concert, visit, or visit the FB event page:
