Set 1
Chicago based prolific composer/bassist, Matt Ulery, presents a new, major work for string sextet+drums, “Become Giant,” originally commissioned by the Chamber Music Festival of Lexington. For this Chicago premier performance, Ulery’s collective trio with Zach Brock and Jon Deitemyer, Triptych, integrate with Chicago based KAIA String Quartet for a dynamic, often romantic, you might say “cinematic” (ic!) chamber music fantasy score in eleven levels that features Zach Brock as both a unique stylistic interpreter and improvising soloist. There are scenes of music that features the ensemble in lush orchestral moments, and other times featuring Zach, weaving through composed parts and improvising in form with string quartet + drums and bass accompaniment creating resounding grooves rooted to modern jazz and folk rhythms. This is very much ensemble music that’s concentrated on the vital emotions in the fabric of the harmony in tow with deeply lyrical melodies. This is adventure music and it happens for about 40 minutes.

Set 2
Trio and Quartet music respectively, Triptych plays new, original trio music composed by Brock, Ulery, and Deitemyer. KAIA String Quartet presents Piazzolla tangos.
