About this concert
By Jon Solomon Dr. Lonnie Smith told Westword three years ago that the Hammond B-3 organ is a part of him, that he’s been eating and breathing the instrument since he started playing more than five decades ago. While his mastery of the instrument is clear on his studio albums, it’s also more than evident on his new live album, All in My Mind, which was recorded during his 75th-birthday celebration in New York and released last month on Blue Note. The disc showcases Smith’s far-reaching talents, whether he’s swinging fierce on Wayne Shorter’s “JuJu” and Freddie Hubbard’s “Up Jumped Spring,” injecting a funky New Orleans feel into Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” or getting spacey during the first half of his original “Alhambra.” Expect some jazz funk, too, from one of the genre’s masters during his two-night stand at Dazzle with longtime guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg.

Great to see a legend in such a wonderful little venue. The acoustics were outstanding. The Dr. and his band consisting of his son on drums played a set mixed with soul, funk and he even plug in his metal walking cane and played it like a bass guitar.
