Davies Symphony Hall
201 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco, CA 94102
Award-winning Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado -- a San Francisco Symphony fave -- is back at the baton for a Davies Hall performance of Brahms, Shostakovich and Salonen. That would be contemporary composer-conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, whose work "Helix" opens the concert. Concertmaster Alexander Barantschik solos on Shostakovich's energetic Violin Concerto No. 2, written late in the Russian composer's career, and the evening comes to a climax with Brahms' First Symphony, which took the self-critical composer the better part of two decades to write and revise, resulting in a dramatic triumph of melody and lyricism.
