Plenty of artists are making albums about the ever-present crushing dread of contemporary America, but no one does everyday anxiety quite as well as Protomartyr. Over four albums, the Detroit post-punk outfit has depicted turmoil both minuscule and enormous, whether drawn from the news or a tortured inner monologue. On Relatives in Descent, frontman Joe Casey continues to articulate the worrisome world around us: “In this age of blasting trumpets/A paradise for fools,” he speak-sings on “A Private Understanding.” The album’s sonic contradictions work together: Casey’s drone is deadpan yet intimate, the guitars jagged yet melodic, the compositions minimalist yet propulsive.
