CULTURE VULTURES is an as-and-when-required 'salon'-themed pop culture event, co-curated/hosted/presented (at festivals/venues) by Tony Clayton-Lea. It consists, essentially, of words and music. The ‘words’ part features a public interview, and there is also some form of spoken word/comedy and music in the blend. Past events have featured music from September Girls, Cat Dowling, Hattie Webb, Lisa O’Neill, Daithi, Join Me In The Pines, Nick Kelly, Ham Sandwich, Jack O'Rourke, The Riptide Movement, Maud in Cahoots, Cathy Davey, Little Green Cars, We Cut Corners, Heathers, and Divine Comedy; spoken word/comedy acts include Colm Keegan, Eleanor Tiernan, Fred Cooke, Colm O’Regan, Sean Nolan, Erin Fornoff, and John Cummins; public interviews have included playwright Mark O’Rowe, author Glenn Patterson, actor Liam Cunningham, Love/Hate creator Stuart Carolan, comedy writer Arthur Mathews (Fr Ted, Big Train, Toast), Neil Hannon (of Divine Comedy), Oscar-nominated film directors Lenny Abrahamson and Tomm Moore, author John Boyne, actress Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Richie Egan (of the band Jape), visual artist Alice Maher, and performance artist Amanda Coogan. LINE-UP Notify is an instrumental ensemble featuring Pádraig Rynne (concertina), Cillian King (guitars and concertina), Eoin Walsh (bass), Davie Ryan (drums) and Cormac McCarthy (piano and Rhodes). The band fuses a deep knowledge and respect for tradition and will perform as well as discuss aspects of their forward-thinking music. Cónal Creedon is a short story writer, novelist, playwright, and documentary film-maker. Based in Cork, he will read from his work, as well as talk about his career. Doireann Ní Ghríofa is a bilingual writer whose books explore birth, death, desire, and domesticity. She has been awarded the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, the Michael Hartnett Prize, and the Ireland Chair of Poetry bursary. Doireann will read from her work as well as discuss aspects of it.
