About this concert
On Friday Jan. 12, WTMD is thrilled to host the album release show for “Cardboard City,” the second album from Baltimore indie rockers Legends of Et cetera. Legends of Et cetera is a young indie rock band formed in Baltimore in 2013 and composed of Serena Miller (guitar and vocals), Graham vonBriesen (bass), and Jakob Coburn (drums). As teenagers, they placed second in WTMD’s 2015 Baltimore Band Block Party, and are one of only a few bands to perform both a Live Lunch and an Evening With live broadcast at the station. Their sophomore album, “Cardboard City,” is set for release on Jan. 6, 2017, Serena’s 20th birthday, and the official album release show will follow at WTMD on Jan. 12. “Cardboard City” opens with “Leather Jacket Art/Pixie Queen,” a song not only about feeling a powerful urge to communicate and finding yourself unable to do so, but also an unrequited love so intense it leaves you reeling. The album’s title track represents a kind of organized chaos, the lyrics capturing what it’s like to live as a fragile being in a fragile city—“Streets are lit up / outside my window / make room for rainbows / cold nights and echoes / you left me here for somewhere else / I’m beside myself.” The album ends with the ethereal “Querétaro,” juxtaposing birds, waves, and a “Bladerunner”-esque saxophone alongside lyrics which describe, however vaguely, the emotions of someone struggling to overcome mental illness while having to adjust to an entirely new environment. Serena, now 20, studies composition at Peabody Conservatory. Jakob, 19, studies drums at Berklee College of Music. And Graham, 18, is a senior at Towson High. Opening acts: Yo No Say is an eclectic five piece from the DC/Baltimore area. This quintet varies in style from driving rhythmic choruses to alt rock and R&B-inspired melodies with experimental harmony. Thunder Club is a five-piece indie rock band from Baltimore, Maryland with an energetic sound that blends groove and melody for a unique tone. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. with opening acts Yo No Say and Thunder Club. This is an all-ages show. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 at the door. WTMD is listener supported public radio from Towson University, at 1 Olympic Place in Towson.

Other than some difficulty in the sound mix , hearing vocals and the guest violinist, it went well. These are all High School kids who play a tight set with good energy and enthusiastic friends in their audience. Working on getting them a gig outside their area.

Legends of Et cetera Biography

Legends of Et cetera formed in Baltimore in 2013, when the oldest member was 16 and the youngest 14. They are Serena Miller on guitar and vocals, Graham vonBriesen on bass and vocals, and Jakob Coburn on drums. (Mack Watson, the band's original keyboard player, recently left the group.)

As teenagers, they placed second in WTMD's 2015 Baltimore Band Block Party, after which they played a Live Lunch and An Evening With, which celebrated the release of their 14-song debut album, Coyote.

Serena and Graham, first cousins, have been playing together since middle school, when they played in a cover band called Oxi-Morons (they now perform together as the acoustic duo Birdhouse). Serena met Jakob at School of Rock, and they soon formed a duo called Riot!, performing covers at places like the celebrated Recher Theater, until Graham and Mack (Serena's best friend since age three) joined them and took the name Legends of Et cetera.

Serena, almost 20, studies composition at Peabody Conservatory. Jakob, 19, studies drums at Berklee College of Music. And Graham, 18, is a senior at Towson High.

You can hear several of their songs—"Give Up the Ghost," "Coyote," "Sydney"—regularly on Baltimore station 89.7 WTMD.

On January 6, Serena's 20th birthday, the band will release their five-song record, Cardboard City.
