Marco Mezquida Biography

There is consensus among the press, programmers, audiences and his own colleagues in pointing to Marco Mezquida as one of the brightest and most promising appearances on the European music scene, and an artist prepared to take over any stage in the world.

Born in Menorca in 1987, he has recorded over twenty albums leading his own projects and fifty more taking part in various projects alongside the best musicians in the country. Some of his more relevant work as a leader include his albums Ravel’s Dreams, Talisman y Letter to Milos, along with Aleix Tobias y Martín Meléndez; his alliance with flamenco guitarist Chicuelo, his revered piano solo concerts, his duets with singers Silvia Pérez Cruz, Andrea Motis and Salvador Sobral, and the project “Piano + IA” commissioned by Sónar Festival.

Simultaneously, Mezquida has developed two symphonic projects: his reinterpretation of Rhapsody in blue, with orchestra and jazz trio, and the creation and premiere of Talaiot, his concert for piano and orchestra, in 2023, at Palau de la Musica. He has as well performed and recorded with jazz legends such as Lee Konitz and Dave Liebman.

Mezquida has presented his projects in many of the most relevant stages in the world: Tokyo Jazz Festival, Kolnër Philharmonie, Konzerthaus in Vienna, North Sea Jazz Festival, Hong Kong Arts Festival, San Sebastián Jazzaldia, Belgrade Jazz, ElbPhilharmonie (Hamburg), Parco della Musica in Rome, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Palau de la Música de Barcelona, Auditori de Barcelona, Bimhuis in Amsterdam, Blue Note in New York and Tokyo and Brussel’s Bozar, to name a few.

He has been awarded Musician of the Year by the Association of Jazz and Modern Musicians of Catalonia not once, but four times; he has received the 2019 City of Barcelona Award for “No hay dos sin tres” (with his project with Flamenco guitarist Juan Gómez “Chicuelo”), the Premi Alicia for Best Discographic Production for his album Talismán, and the jury’s and audience’s BMW Welt Jazz Awards 2022 for his recent work Letter to Milos.
