The Timbre of Cedar Biography

Though its name evokes images of a land with towering trees, winding rivers, and vast lakes, The Timbre of Cedar is rooted in the burgeoning urban forest of Metro Detroit. Cutting through the peripheral noise of sonic and existential monotony, the five-piece musical collective crafts a refreshing brand of anthemic indie-rock, inspired and instilled with a transparency of the soul and a yearning for grace.

The band’s latest release, Restoring the Light, displays a collectively-written and creatively cohesive record with a refined sound, encapsulating the tension between reality and faith under a canopy of hope. Lead vocalist Marrissa Parham sings with stirring conviction and disarming sincerity while flourishing instrumentation swirls in a backdrop of cinematic indie-rock.

Beginning in 2014, The Timbre of Cedar grew organically from a simply-planted seed: a gift of studio time from Sam Parham (bass) to then-girlfriend Marrissa LeClair (lead vocals), now a married couple and the driving force behind the band. The musical project blossomed into tangible reality with the release of a self-titled EP and the addition of Alex Rahill on guitar and twin brothers Eric Grzyb on drums and Andrew Grzyb on guitar. Three years later the band is deep-rooted in their craft, toiling at the hearts of listeners to cultivate a sense of belonging and spread a message of hope.

The Timbre of Cedar has branched out to support acts like Brandon Heath, Aaron Gillespie, House of Heroes, Come Wind, Flint Eastwood, Sanctus Real, Mike Mains and Vesperteen. The band has performed at venues and festivals such as The Ark, The Blind Pig, 20 Front Street, Spring Arbor University, Wayne State University, Arts, Beats & Eats (MI), Riverlights Music Festival (IN), Big Ticket Festival (MI), and Icthus Music Festival (KY). The Timbre of Cedar’s song “Restoring the Light” is in regular rotation on HOME.fm in Spring Arbor and band has been featured on WYCE in Grand Rapids and live on WDIV-TV in Detroit.
