Luke Hendon Music

Veteran guitarist, Luke Hendon will be the featured artist Sunday, December 3rd, 8PM, at Cornelia Street Café for the Django at Cornelia Street Series. This month Mr. Hendon has put together an all-star cast to perform his original music- a modern take on gypsy jazz, melding influences of the past and present. Luke Hendon has had success as a guitarist playing in a plethora of settings, but recently became obsessed with the French acoustic guitars used by Django Reinhardt and Gypsy jazz players. “It is the same style of guitar used by Django and his predecessors, who use a lot of vibrato, bends, tremolo, open strings, staccato and energetic runs that aren't heard as much in American jazz. That appeals to me, and I was fascinated by the excitement Django and the gypsies created. His latest album, Silk & Steel is “beautifully performed and every note counts.” Says JazzScene magazine. Jazz Profiles Says it’s “an homage to Django’s influence accompanied by Luke’s statement of independent creativity.” And The New York City Jazz Record states that “Hendon’s take on the style is to inject some very modern energy along with judiciously placed non-jazz undertones. That’s the crucial difference between maintaining and enriching a legacy.” Equally exciting is the band that will accompany Luke. The band is truly world class with Tony Jarvis (The Dap Kings, Treme, The Deuce) on baritone clarinet and sax, Scott Tixier on Violin (Stevie Wonder, Kenny Barron), Ben Rubens on upright bass (Jonny O’neal) and Josh Kaye on Rhythm guitar (Stephane Wrembel, Koran Agan, Paulus Schafer).
