Mister Vertigo Biography

Mister Vertigo was assembled when guitarist/songwriter Matthew Hajdys met singer/songwriter Jonathan Scanlon as freshman at the University Of New Hampshire. Matthew had been playing with longtime friend and drummer/songwriter Jon Carpenter so the 3 friends formed the core unit of the band. In late 2002 they released their debut LP, Wintermusik, an ambitious and artistically rich set. It was produced by the accomplished Andy Happel (Thanks to Gravity), a noted songwriter, violinist and producer. Mister Vertigo played in and around the UNH/Haverhill Ma. area to support the effort, but sights were securely set on a second studio venture. 2003 marked the beginning of what would become Mister Vertigos second long-player, titled Mister Vertigos Fear of Heights. While most of it was again produced by Andy Happel, the band expanded horizons. Collaborating with Matt Tahaney and Matthew Beaudoin of famed Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA, they even got some mixing help from MIKE DENNEEN (Aimee Mann, Fountains of Wayne, Gigolo Aunts). The record was released on 05/03/05.
In April of 2006 Mister Vertigo returned to the studio with Producer SCOTT RIEBLING (Fall Out Boy, Metro Station, We The Kings, Cobra Starship, Lustra, The Academy Is) to record two new tracks. The songs "Hammerstrong" and "Halfway Home" became the first two tracks cut for the bands 3rd full length record SONGS TO LEANN. The band headed into producer Dennis Carroll’s home studio in Haverhill MA, the week of June 18th 2007 to put the finishing touches on the record. SCOTT RIEBLING also returned to add some mixing help to the records signature track "Cosmo". The record was released on Aug. 30th 2007 to a sold out show at Bills Bar on Boston’s famed Lansdowne St.
After the “Songs To Leann” record release show. The band went on an extended hiatus (with the exception of a 1 day, demo session at Q Division Studio’s in Feb. of 2008) that would last till the fall of 2010.
In Oct. 2010, the band returned to the studio working with Scott Riebling at his new state of the art recording facility in Raynham MA. The band also found a 2nd home at ZIPPAH Recording in Boston MA with producers MIKE DAVIDSON, BRIAN CHARLES, & ANNIE HOFFMAN (The Sheila Divine, The Figgs, Azure Ray, Bright Eyes, The Faint). They have also added lead guitar/keyboard player John (Duey) Ducharme (formally of Violet Nine) & bassist Ry Donovan to the permanent band lineup. The new 14 track LP “Metatheory” and 6 song EP “Subtheories” reached completion in the summer of 2011. The new records feature guest vocals from Aaron Perrino (The Sheila Divine/Dear Leader), Noelle Leblanc (Damone/The Organ Beats), trumpet from Shills front man Brian Murphy, and an array of contributions from former Ways To Fall multi instrumentalist Eryk Fairchild who is now a full time member of the band performing keyboard & guitar duties.
Due to more recording opportunities in 2012 the band chose to delay the release of the new records. They headed into CONOR OBERST & MIKE MOGIS’ ARC studios in Omaha Nebraska to record 5 new tracks with producer A.J. MOGIS (Criteria, The Faint, Jenny Lewis, Cursive, The Get Up Kids). While in Omaha the band collaborated with Mynabirds vocalist Laura Burhenn as well as Tilly and the Wall front woman Kianna Alarid Cameron. This new recording endeavor led to the band returning to Boston and Zippah Recording to track another 5 songs with producer Brian Charles. A.J. Mogis also made a trip up to Boston to produce another 5 songs for the band at Zippah which has now become the bands home base for making new music. The band released the new E.P. "Taciturn" on Jan 18th 2013 and the "Metatheory" LP on July 27th 2013. The “Subtheories” EP was released on Jan. 28th 2014 as a down-load only record available exclusively on Bandcamp.
The band completed a new, 11 song LP called “Dreaming On The Left Side” that came out in July of 2016. In June of 2017 they released a cover of the Michael Penn song "No Myth" on Boston's "Zippah Records" Indie label. The "Indie Nerd Strikes Again" EP came out on December 25, 2020.

QUOTES/PRESS:
"i've done two records and an EP with Mister Vertigo.. all of which have been meticulous and intense experiences. they are a very artistic band centered around the writing pair of Jon Scanlon and Matt Hajdys. the vocals are stunning.. and the dynamic power of the writing is overwhelming at times.. definitely worth your time to check out." ~ Andy Happel (Producer, Engineer, and former Capitol Records recording artist with the band "Thanks to Gravity")

"Our first time seeing Mister Vertigo was a pleasure. Though they didn’t bust out their cover of Morrissey’s “Everyday Is Like Sunday (the right decision, even though it was Sunday), they did find a groove a few songs into their set and ended their theatrical, almost dirge-like hard rock effort with sharp precision and unbridled “thank you for having us” energy. Mister Vertigo are the quintessential “I might not have ever seen these guys play live but thanks to the Rumble I did and I’m glad it happened” band. And right off the bat they made everyone step up their game."

"Mister Vertigo could be this year’s Await Rescue. You can argue with the style or the songs but you can’t argue with the delivery. The band played tight and clean, almost power pop but with too many creative detours -- almost power prog at moments. I didn’t expect such a pretty voice to come out of such an imposing frontman, but there you have it: the Rumble is about surprises and nice little discoveries."

"Leading off the festivities (at the 2015 Rock 'n' Roll Rumble) is Mister Vertigo: singer-songwriter soul couched in indie-rock jams, slow ballads, and radio-friendly pop-rock."
~DO617

"Mister Vertigo split their time between Boston and New Hampshire’s version of Salem, so we’ll include them here for the purpose of this exercise. We were first exposed to the band a few years ago via their cover of Morrissey’s “Every Day Is Like Sunday”, and any band that covers Moz (and does it well) is a-o-fucking-kay with us. Pro tip: Always cover Morrissey."

"Mister Vertigo are an emotional, melodic, eclectic indie rock band from Boston who incorporate elements of power pop, folk, progressive rock, punk, shoegaze, and americana to create a unique sound. Originally assembled in 2002 as freshman at the University Of New Hampshire they released three full length records over five years. The band went on an extended hiatus that would last till the spring of 2010. The band regrouped with a slight shift in style, a reinforced line-up and started writing new music once again. Mister Vertigo loves being part of the local Boston music scene and take great pride in promoting and supporting other artists from the region. Look for their new 11 song LP, Dreaming On The Left Side, in the spring of 2016."
