START/OVER

START/OVER is a progressive metalcore band from Amsterdam. Risen out of the ashes of previous bands, the band sets out to create an unique soundscape that combines hard hitting riffs and mesmerizing melodies. With influences from melodic hardcore, djent and prog, the band has created their own sound that won’t leave you unsatisfied.
In 2017 the band released their debut EP “Laments” which is available on all popular services.

In 2017, START/OVER have started the organisation 'HEAVY/SOUNDS' to boost the Dutch heavy scene.

"We hebben in Nederland ontzettend veel opkomende bandjes. START/OVER wil zichzelf tussen de gevestigde orde wurmen. Zijn eerste EP “Laments” is nu verkrijgbaar en bevat zes snoeiharde nummers.

Het is vanaf opener “Wake Me Up” duidelijk dat de band iets nieuws wil neerzetten. Een onheilspellend intro, gevolgd door de rauwe klanken van frontman Rowan Kraak, zorgt ervoor dat alles op scherp staat. Alsof de EP in de startblokken staat om de wereld in te knallen. “Two Worlds” doet daar nog een schepje bovenop. Nog een tikkeltje agressiever, heerlijke korte stiltes in de riffs en een geweldige breakdown zorgen ervoor dat het begin van “Laments” bijzonder goed is.

We vervolgen onze donkere reis met “Nomad”, een nummer halverwege de EP. Waar andere bands halverwege nog wel eens willen verslappen, weet START/OVER de aandacht er bijzonder goed bij te houden. De vocals nemen, net als de rest van de band, geen gas terug. Het is opmerkelijk dat de band in dit genre zoveel afwisseling weet te creëren en tegelijkertijd blijft vermaken.

Die afwisseling hoor je ook terug in “Venetian Carnaval”. In het intro horen we zowaar clean vocals. Wel moet hier een kleine kanttekening worden geplaatst: de kracht van de band ligt namelijk niet bij de rustige stukken. Het nummer bewijst wel dat de band ontzettend vaardig is in het bespelen van de instrumenten, maar het intro mist de kracht die later in het nummer gelukkig weer terugkomt.

“Saviour” begint ook rustig. Het intro doet je eerder denken aan een klassiek stuk dat vanaf een LP wordt gespeeld, dan een metalband. Opnieuw kiest de band ervoor om na het intro clean vocals te gebruiken. En ook hier mist deze zangpartij de kracht die even later weer volop aanwezig is. Uiteraard laat dit wel weer zien dat de band in staat is om meer te doen dan alleen een flinke bak ‘herrie’ te produceren. Toch is hij hiermee een stuk overtuigender en beter dan de stukken die clean zijn. Tot slot brengt afsluiter “Survival of the Fittest” het beste van START/OVER naar voren. Er zit namelijk een geweldige afwisseling in de gitaarpartijen en de heerlijk rauwe vocals. Het ontzettende strakke spel maakt dit nummer tot een geweldige afsluiter.

START/OVER weet met “Laments” een ontzettend sterke eerste EP af te leveren. De band laat zien dat hij goed is in samenspel en vooral dat hij goede muziek kan maken. Laten we hopen dat hij met zijn volledige album nog minder clean vocals gebruikt en doet wat hij op dit album uitmuntend weet te doen: een flinke bak toffe ‘herrie’ maken.

"START/OVER have released their first ever EP Laments and I must say for being the bands first release I am very impressed. The vocals I would almost compare to a very young Parkway Drive with very strong guttural sounds. There is crushing drums used to almost hypnotize you into bobbing your head and wanting to stamp your feet. A few well timed breakdowns and some nice little melodies dotted here and there make up a very well balanced EP. My personal favorite is the track Savior which I believe is a more melodic song compared to some of the others. Wake Me Up is a hard hitting in your face track with heavy drums and guitars that most people will love. The last track I would like to highlight is Venetian Carnival that I believe will become a fan favorite and will probably be a song that the band will play at shows for years to come. All in all I believe that this is a great first attempt from the band and I hope they go on to develop their clean vocals a little bit more and try to be a little bit more adventurous with the guitar riffs that they use."
