About this concert
Please join us for a special night of Magic In The Other's first date of their fall residency at the Ivy Room with El Duo. Born in 2015, Oakland's "El Duo" blends lo-fi electronics and afro dance grooves with a natural sense of wonder. Drawing from their deep love of improvisation, drummer/producer Randy Schwartz (Brett Dennen, Illumination) & keyboardist Harrison Murphy (Sun Hop Fat, Harry & the Hitmen) curate unique and inspired soundscapes for audiences. El Duo weaves together its unabashed brand of experimental dance music under an umbrella of vintage synthesizers and drum machines. The witty pair approaches their concerts with a raw and loose fervor, often featuring special guests, which gives each of their shows its own distinct magic and character. www.theelduo.com www.instagram.com/theelduo www.facebook.com/theelduo/ www.reverbnation.com/theelduo Magic In The Other founder and leader Ezra Lipp has spent the last decade honing his craft as one of the most creative, versatile, and in-demand drummers in the Bay Area and beyond. He has performed all over the US and around the world with an impressive and diverse roster of bands and artists including the likes of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, Iranian counter-culture superstar Mohsen Namjoo, Folk-Soul troubadour Sean Hayes, and many others. In this long-overdue original project, Lipp has created a collaborative vehicle with which to express his unique musical sensibilities. Magic In The Other brings to life original compositions, presents creative twists on unexpected covers, and delves into unexplored musical territory only possible when communicating deeply with other fine musicians and a potent audience. Undoubtedly, the performance is also peppered with banter and antics reflecting Lipp’s unique brand of humor and creativity. In the very first incarnation of Magic In The Other, Ezra Lipp has recruited a swift and nimble trio featuring the relentlessly groovy Steve Adams on the bass (ALO, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers) and innovative Oakland guitarist Roger Riedlbauer (Mercury Falls). The music indirectly borrows from many different influences and idioms: be it the rhythmic sophistication of Jazz and West African music, the energy and spirit of Rock N’ Roll, the movement based compositional format of Western Classical, or the improvisatory intensity of North India Ragas. However, it ultimately fuses many influences together to create something unique and refreshing. Magic In The Other attempts to deeply connect with the listener, creating a mentally stimulating, emotionally resonate, highly danceable, and distinctly transformative experience where everyone leaves feeling slightly more magical. MITO is thrilled to be hosted at The Ivy Room this fall where they will be playing 6 shows between Oct-Dec with a different band every night! www.MagicInTheOther.net www.facebook.com/MagicInTheOther www.instagram.com/magicintheother/
