Renee Goust Biography

Short bio:

“Renee Goust is a Mexican-American singer-songwriter who is working hard to reframe traditional Mexican music to be more inclusive… She is redefining how traditional Mexican music is heard.” - Jeanne Montalvo, LATINO USA

"... Brilliant neo-folklore SINGER-SONGWRITER, whose songs aim to raise social awareness about issues such as migration, gender equality, and LGBT+ diversity" - CATALINA MARIA JOHNSON - MUSIC JOURNALIST, RADIO HOST, PRODUCER OF BEAT LATINO

Bilingual singer-songwriter Renee Goust, who grew up on the US/Mexico border, writes about gender equality, queer experiences, migration, and other social justice issues to champion communities that have been historically under-represented in Latin folk music. Her songs “La cumbia feminazi” and “Querida muerte (No nos maten)” are being used as agents for social change in feminist marches throughout Latin America and Spain. She was awarded NYFA's Women’s Fund Grant in 2020, with which she produced her album “RESISTER", a manifesto of 8 original songs by, for, and about women and non-binary folks.

Renee Goust has performed in Europe, North America and South America, appearing on renowned stages such as Lincoln Center, Guggenheim Museum, and Mexico City's El Cantoral. She has been featured on outlets such as Billboard, NPR’s Latino USA, and Spain’s El Pais, to name a few. Renee has composed original music for Jessica Mendez-Siqueiros films "The Last of the Chupacabras" and "Pozole", produced by Disney & WeTransfer, respectively. She was recently selected as a 2021-2022 Cultural Ambassador for the U.S. by American Music Abroad.
