Monday Night Social Biography

Before the music eventually brought them together, the three founding members of MondayNightSocial were finding their musical voices on their own. Christian was cutting his teeth as a musician in Cleveland, Tennessee. He released a solo album with his band Christian Mann and the Guilty Pleasures, emulating the emerging blues style of John Mayer - a major influence on his music at the time. Shortly thereafter, the band separated and Christian became heavily involved in different churches as a worship leader while also working as a teacher, husband and father. He still longed, however, to sing songs - original songs - outside of a religious setting.

Meanwhile, Janet was starting her musical career as a guitarist while earning a music degree in Savannah, Georgia. Soon after beginning her studies, Janet was introduced to percussion and fell in love with it, deciding to make that her primary focus instead of guitar. Janet went on to win various scholarships and awards for theory excellence and music performance, along with earning a degree. School is also where she met Brock.
Brock was playing at local coffee shops and church while also pursuing a music degree. Needless to say, the two instantly clicked. Both excelled in the academic arena, but they also shared a musical interest outside of classical arrangements. Brock was a music director at a church and he and Janet soon began leading songs and playing together, which is where they developed their affinity for vocal harmonies. A little over a year after meeting the two were married and, after graduating, made the move to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

It was at a church in Chattanooga the three met and developed a mutual musical respect as well as genuine friendship. Shortly thereafter they self-produced a Christmas album, even crafting an original track entitled Bah Humbug to include among the other Holiday classics. It was through the process of writing and recording this song that the first spark of what would become MondayNightSocial emerged; an earnest melody, raw lyrical emotion, and intricate 3-part harmonies voiced a soaring sound none of them quite expected. Separately, their voices have distinct, almost antithetical qualities, yet when they came together in harmony it was apparent something special had just happened. Work began toward producing an EP of all original music, bringing in songs each had written over the last few years and beginning the process of finding a single, unified direction in which to take the band. The next piece of the puzzle came late in 2015 when bassist Josh English joined the group.

Born into a musical family, Josh was introduced to a wide range of instruments and genres before finally settling on bass. Originally from Ohio, Josh moved to Tennessee in the summer of 2015 where he began playing alongside the other three members at church. It was apparent that the band had found that important piece that had been missing, someone to hold down the rhythmic acoustics permeating MondayNightSocial’s indie folk groove.

In 2017, Janet, being the multi-instrumentalist that she is, decided to come out from behind the drumset and focus on guitar, percussion, and vocals. To free up Janet for these roles, the band brought on drummer JG Oliver.

JG had played drums for various bands and genres back in the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee. However, he had recently moved his family down to Chattanooga and was hoping to plug in to a new band. The timing was perfect since Janet had a mutual friend with JG's wife that introduced them. After Janet found that he was looking for a band, she invited him to a rehearsal. Things clicked and JG was invited to join. Together with Josh, he gives MNS a solid, driving beat that adds to their genre-bending sound.
