Leading independent music & arts publication The AU Review is turning NINE years old, so we're throwing a party to celebrate! It'll be happening in Sydney on Wednesday, August 30th at the Lansdowne Hotel - and it'll be completely free (with RSVP)!
As in past years, the AU will be presenting performances from some of our favourite emerging artists from around the country. This year we welcome Sydney's Bad Pony, one of the city's finest up-and-coming bands. We've had the chance to see them on stage in Singapore, Canada (at our own party no less) and here at home, and consider them to be one of the must witness bands in Australia right now. Don't miss this chance to find out why we think so!
Also performing live, all the way from Perth, are one of the most exciting outfits in the whole country right now: Boat Show. You don't have to look further than tracks like "Cis White Boy”, “Staying Alive” and "Suss” - all of which have enjoyed triple j play - to understand why we're excited about this group. But it's not until you see them live that you will discover what all the fuss is about. Expect them to tear the roof off The Lansdowne in a rare Sydney appearance.
And finally, also from WA, Dream Rimmy will be hitting the decks for a special DJ set, with more still to be announced!

It’s not often you come across a band that are equal parts rock, dance and pop and have a completely unconventional live set up, but when you do, they’re called Bad Pony and they are every part the recipe for a bloody good time.
Straight out of Sydneys’ Inner West, Bad Pony return with their latest single Deficiency, out independently on March 31. With enough grit, grind and dance to send you into a tumble, Bad Pony have stayed true to their form of releasing quality tunes beyond their years. Deficiency sees the band travel down a new direction and whilst still incorporating the sound that has seen them become one of Sydney’s premiere acts, the track is an obvious journey of personal and musical growth.
“Deficiency is about being absorbed by the greedy, selfish nature of Sydney,” explains frontman Jarred Young. “We sat by my piano and arranged the tune from a bunch of voice memos recorded on Jarred’s phone” adds guitarist and kick-drummer, Sam Thomlinson. “It started out as a bit of a mix and match, but came together in the end. We wrote the bridge in a rehearsal session, in one of our ‘let's just play and see what happens’ moments. I produced the track at home, and recorded the drums with Jarred, then we sent it off to Cron (guitars and vocals) to be mixed and mastered.”
Taken from their forthcoming EP of the same title, Deficiency is a taste of what fans can expect in 2017 from probably the most energetic, dedicated, tour-addicted band in Australia. “It’s going to be our heaviest yet. However, I think there will be some more subtle moments as well,” tells Thomlinson of the new direction.
After playing hundreds of shows in 2016, including the prestigious Music Matters, Bad Pony aren’t showing any signs of slowing down this year. In support of the release the boys will be heading to the US to play a string of dates across Los Angeles, New York City and Philadelphia before heading off to Canada to showcase at Canadian Music Week. “We’re all super excited,” starts Thomlinson, and with an energy and connection that goes beyond the stage, Young finishes his sentence, “super duper excited. Canadian Music Week started following us on Twitter, so naturally I thought ‘should probably apply for that’. So I did and we got an email back that day!”
So what else can you expect to see from Bad Pony in 2017? The band promise new, darker tunes, an EP and a heap of shows. It’s set to be their biggest year yet, so be sure to saddle up and hop on board the Bad Pony train before it takes off!
Recorded in one three hour session last December, BOAT SHOW’s debut album’ GROUNDBREAKING MASTERPIECE’ hit the airwaves less than six months after the band formed and cemented the fierce and fun reputation their live show was already building them.
Containing songs mostly about being women, and the pros and cons they have to deal with in the music industry, “Groundbreaking Masterpiece” articulates perfectly their personal frustrations in their signature brutal and humorous style.
Premiered on LISTEN with an accompanying interview, in no time at all the album received 4.5/5 stars from The West Australian and RTRFM Local Feature Album. Tracks “Cis White Boy”, “Staying Alive” and "Suss” all received airplay on jjj with with “Staying Alive” and “Cis White Boy” both receiving jjj unearthed rotation and the latter also hitting the AMRAP Community Radio Metro Charts.
Receiving more likes than a cat with laserbeams, the band soon found themselves being asked to drink the riders of Cate le Bon, Cameron Avery, Gooch Palms, Pond, San Cisco and Alex Lahey and joined Perth royalty Jebediah and Gyroscope at the inaugural City Limits festival.
In February BOAT SHOW found them selves playing their debut east coast shows in Perth 2 or as it’s known in some circles “Melbourne”. While on the other side of this wide brown land, the band’s singer/songwriter Ali Flintoff and bassist Indigo Foster-Tuke popped into the national broadcaster to have a chat for triple j unearthed’s International Women's Day feature "7 important voices which need to be heard" alongside Miss Blanks, Glitoris, Le Pie, The Football Club, Moaning Lisa and Nikki Brumen.
When asked about BOAT SHOW, Flintoff says "I hate it when bands quote themselves in their own bios, but our managers can't think of a better way to mention that apart from Indi and I, Jennifer Aslett and Stella Donnelly play guitar in BOAT SHOW and George Foster plays drums."
BOAT SHOW will be heading to Melbourne in May to eat dumplings and record their second album. Boat Show have penned an anthem for 2017.

Perth shoegazing dream pop five piece Dream Rimmy have had an eventful eighteen months. Conceived and led by vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist Ali Flintoff, the lineup has evolved to include guitarists Jennifer Aslett and Jack Gaby, Ben McDonald on bass and George Foster on drums and vocls.
Dream Rimmy released two standalone singles “Waves” and “Landslide” in 2016, both of which made it to the top ten of RTRFM’s most played list of that year.
Particularly beloved by this station, Dream Rimmy made a huge impression playing RTRFM’s annual flagship live event for 2017, In The Pines. “Landslide” enjoyed spot rotation on triple j and rotation on FBi during October of last year.
After appearing at the Fremantle leg of 2017 St Jerome’s Laneway Festival as the triple j unearthed pick and embarking on their first national tour at the start of 2017, the band have just released their sophomore EP ‘Heavy’ which was recorded and mixed by Dave Parkin from Blackbird Studios.
The EP’s first single “Like Me”, released in January, has received airplay on RTRFM, triple j, RRR as well as receiving FBi rotation. The EP was RTRFM’s local feature with second single “Oxygen” picking up spins on triple j, community radio and receiving Double J rotation.
On the live front, the band have played at the 2014 and 2015 WAM festival, the 2015 State Of The Art Festival (alongside You Am I, Birds Of Tokyo and The Scientists) and the aforementioned Fremantle Laneway Festival. They’ve also supported The Preatures, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, Holy Holy,
Wolfmother, Ali Barter, Mosquito Coast, Dungen and ’90’s indie favourites Ash and shoegaze heroes Swervedriver.
